Patrons fortunate enough to attend this stunning and varied concert thrilled to a broad spectrum of works -- Bach, Britten, Rodrigo, de Falla, Ger- hard, and others -- performed by the dazzl- ing Kraft and Co. The hearty applause, recep- tion and encore were well earned on Saturday night. Norbert Kraft, the 1979 CBC Talent Grand Prize winner, who now combines performing with teaching guitar, his harpischordist-pianist wife and co-performer, Bonnie Silver, and their friend, lyric tenor Henry Ingram, who has performed at the Bach Aria Festival, N.Y. melded their talents for a smoothly orchestrated musical evening in the newly decorated hall. Fully sensitive to each other, Kraft and Silver opened with their inter- pretation of Bach's Pre- lude in E Major. Two Renaissance lute songs were then accompanied by guitarist Kraft. The second of these, 'It Fell on a Summer's Day' by Campian, was describ- ed as "naughty" by its performer Ingram, who bewitched the audience with his modern inter- pretation of an old song. Four vibrant folk songs from the British Isles followed, accompanied by Silver on piano: the familiar, tender 'Sally Gardens', the robust 'Plough Boy', a gorg- eously phrased and roll- ing 'O Waly, Waly', and the concluding 'Oliver Cromwell', an exercise in diction if ever there was one, ending abrupt- ly and humorously with "if you want any more you can sing it your- self"'. His choices show- ed Ingram has wit as well as talent. The first half conclud- ed with a virtuoso per- formance on piano of Chopin's Fourth Ballade by Silver in full commamd of the instru- ment, tiny hands caus- ing it to respond to its full range, pianissimo to fortissimo, with a mag- ical touch. The second half open- ed with Kraft on guitar and Silver on piano in an unique blend of classical guitar and jazz piano, giving an entirely differ- ent texture to the pro- gram -- blues appetizer with a Spanish aperitif. This led to the evening's Headquarters for 'Freeman Formalwear (fue « ene Wear eed. highlight in a night of superlatives: Norbert Kraft"s technically per- fect solos on his chosen instrument thrilling with the sounds of Spain. At once with his beguiling guitar, Kraft took us to the home of that instrument in 'Asturias' by Albeniz, inspired by the region and revealing a legend. A resonant, echoing, splendid interpretation of Campanas del Alba (bells at dawn) rippled its themes to the melody's fragile end. Then the set concluded with a lively Miller's Dance by auel de Falla in the orchestral sound of flamenco guitar. Throughout, Kraft let the teacher show through just a little as he commented on his selections and put his personal touch on them. Two lilting, swingy Spanish songs revealed tenor Ingram's profic- icncy in the language. La Indita "Beguiled the senses' and El Toro with its 'wild and crazy runs" also expanded the performer's range as both singer and raconteur. He was total- ly at ease in banter with the audience and in vocal virtuosity. A meinorable duo of Canciones. The program closed with Kraft on guitar and Silver on harpsichord as they recreated in a precision display Boccherini's Fourth Quintet Fandango, originally written for string quartet and guitar. Kraft explained lightly that "every- thing but the kitchen sink had been thrown in SCHOOL SUPPLIES Pencils - Lined Paper Erasers - Note Books Math Sets - etc. PORT PERRY STAR to make this an event". The number is based on an improvised Spanish flamenco evening where the dancers enthusias- tically compete with one another. Kraft and Silver did not dis- appoint, and were called back several times, at last consenting to an encore --- Danza de las Hachas (hat dance) by Rodrigo. It was a vital, glowing evening shone upon by three of Canada's rising stars. Much more is sure to be heard from them. Their enthusias- tic audience agreed: "superlative" was the word for Kraft and Co. The next concert date ° for Town Hall 1873 supporters will be the entertaining, original, unusual, and vigorous 'Night at the Grand', with David Waldren and Arlene Meadows -- a 'must see' for sure.
