18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, Sept. 25, 1984 Moving day for victim of immunity breakdown Tuesday, September 25 was to be moving day for Sandra Stronge and her parents. Family friends were hoping that the new home the Stronges pur- chased east of Black- stock would be ready following extensive ren- ovations by a small army of volunteers over the past couple of weeks. Virtually the entire house had to be gutted and renovated to make it as environmentally "'clean" as possible for 24 year old Sandra, the Oshawa native who four years ago suffered a complete break-down of her immune system and ever since has had violent 'and life-threat- ening reactions to just about everything in the atmosphere. Doctors in Texas who treated Sandra this past summer told the family she likely would not survive unless they moved from their home in Oshawa to the coun- try where the air is cleaner, and free of ALAN J. After searching for a couple of months, the family finally found what they hope is the answer: a two-storey home on a rural con- cession road about five miles east of Black- stock. Realtor Ruth Hunt of Royal Trust in Oshawa, who sold the home to the Stronges is now co- ordinating the move and the extensive reno- vations and re-furnish- ing that has gone on over the past few weeks. - In an interview with the Star at the new home last Thursday, Mrs. Stronge said the renovations have prov- ed difficult and the work was behind target by a couple of days. One of the main pro- blems has been finding building materials for the renovations which are free of plastics and chemicals, two sub- stances which Sandra is violently allergic too. The same goes for furniture. Mrs. Hunt says that anyone who would like - to help the Stronge family with donations of furniture should contact her at 576-5544. Wood furniture is ideal, but it should not be too old or mouldy. A lot of people have contributed volunteer labour to the renova- tions, including Murray Hamilton of Port Perry, a member of the Oshawa Fire depart- ment. Mr. Hamilton said last week that more work will be needed and anyone, especially skill- ed tradesmen, who want to help, should phone him at 985-8925. The upstairs will be converted into a self- contained unit for Sandra, while her parents will live on the main floor of the home. The upstairs unit will be partially glassed to try and keep pollutants away from Sandra. Sandra's doctors feel that her immune system could re-build over a period of four or five years, providing she is able to live in an environment that is as pollutant-free as poss- ible. Her immune system broke down four years ago following a bout with mononucleosis and exposure to a strong pesticide. This has caused her life threaten- ing allergic reactions to just about everything, including perfume and everyday hand soap. SIPCO OIL PORT PERRY This group of volunteers were hard at story).
