38 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, Oct. 2, 1984 "Parenting group: First aid for hassled mom battling your way through the aisles with three kids in tow. You're | You're in a grocery | store, lined up at the cashier's desk after tired. All you want to do is pay for the groceries and go home. Your son spots a chocolate bar and says he wants one. You say no, because you don't like your children to eat junk food. He pleads. You shake your head. Then he becomes more and more demanding, toss- ing his head, stamping his feet in the midst of a full-blown temper tan- trum. Your other two children join in. Suddenly it seems like the whole store is star- ing at you. Embarass- ment sends red gushing up in your cheeks. Do you shut the kids up by relenting and buying them the chocolate? Or do you stand your ground and risk further embarassment? Day in and day out parents are faced with similar situations where their children are con- tinually testing to see how far they can go. Parents often don't know what to do with their kids. Parental ability to raise children seems to be lost because the traditional methods of child-raising no long- er work and few people have learned new methods which can take their place. With that in mind, a Parent Study Group has RT a ees it wn id a parents new ideas and encouragement when dealing with their children. As Mr. Norris points out, the group is not specifically designed for parents with problem children--rather, it has been created for all parents, whether they have problems or not. The group is merely set up to act as a forum for discussion and educa- tion. Organized in one and a half hour weekly sessions for 10 weeks, the group will base its study around the works of Rudolph Dreikur, author of Children: The Challenge. Each parent in the study group will be obligated to buy Dr. Dreikur's text book as part of the course, but summary hand-outs will be distributed as well. The group gets under- way Thursday, October 11 at 1 p.m. in the Family Counselling office at 208 North Street (behind the Community Care office) in Port Perry. The 10 week fee is $30. Interest- ed parents are invited to call Charlie Norris at 985-7665. A New Livingroom Suite doesn't have to cost a fortune! You can save a "bundle" at "'ilson's.
