22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, Dec. 4, 1984 Sports Joe Nicholson provides the scoring punch by John B. McClelland Led by the four goal performance of sharp- shooters Brian Nichol- son, the Port Perry MoJacks handed the Little Britain Mer- chants a 7-3 defeat in Junior C action Sunday night at the Scugog Arena. It was just the fourth victory of the season for the MoJacks who have been hit by injuries recently, but the team turned in a solid effort at both ends of the rink and was full marks for the win. MoJacks never trail- ed as they opened a 3-0 lead early in the second period, allowed the Mer- chants to tie the score by the mid-point, then scored four un-answer- ed goals to put the game on ice. It was the second good effort in as many games for the MoJacks who lost a tough 4-3 decision to the first place Port Hope Panthers Thurs- day evening in Port Hope. But the story of the game Sunday night against the Merchants was the play of Brian . "*Joe" Nicholson. He was easily the best player on the ice and got the MoJacks rolling at 5:02 of the first when he cashed in a pass from Rob- Nicholson. He played the big role in MoJacks second goal of the game at the 18 second mark of the middle frame with the team skating at four aside. Nicholson led the rush into the Merchants zone, fed a pass to Mike Ryan who flipped the puck high into the net. Just 45 seconds later, MoJacks took a 3-0 lead as centre Scott Wallace cleanly won a face-off and drew the puck back to Bob Horton in the high slot. All in one motion, Horton snapped a perfect shot to the corner before Mer- chant goalie John Mc- Eachern could make a move. The only weak spot in the entire game for the MoJacks happened for several minutes early in Eagles out early at Bancroft event by Hillis Wilbur The Grant Menzies Eagles travelled to Ban- croft on the weekend and won their first game against Bancroft only to lose out to Deseronto in their second game. In the second game they played a strong Deseronto team and lost 4to 1 which put them out of the tournament. Scor- ing the lone marker for Port was Dave Burnett Tweens over Woodville 7-3 On Saturday Dec- ember 1, the Port Perry Chris Allen Aluminum Tweens, hosted Wood- ville for a league game. It was a fast-paced game with Port winning by a score of 7-3. Kerri Allen played a good game in net, stopp- ing Woodville on numer- ous occasions. She also received lots of help from her defensemen, while the forwards took care of putting the ring in the other net. Scoring for Port was Kelly Calloway with 3 goals, 1 assist; Michelle Beare 1 goal, 2 assists, Lisa Levy ° als, 1 assist; Rachel Traynor 2 goal while Heather Lawrence, Jackie Dur- ham and Jennifer Pelow "each picked up 1 assist. Sunday we played Lindsay and outscored them 17-1. Thanks to the good work of the red sticks, Kerri Allen didn't face too many shots on net, while everyone figured in the SCOTIng. Jackie Durham got 3 goals, 2 assists; Rachel Traynor and Jenny Blanchard each receiv- ed 2 goals, 3 assists; Kelly Calloway scored 4 goals; Kim Caudle got 1 goal, 3 assists Michelle Beare picked up 4 assists, Jennifer Pelow 2 goals, 1 assist; Lisa Levy 1 goal, 2 assists; Melissa Moehring 1 goal, 1 assist while Connie Norton, Cindy Harris and Nicole Slack each received 1 assist Our next game is on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. at our annual tournament where we will be trying for another gold medal!! This should be an excellent game, so hope to see lots of fans out to support the Eagles. the second period as the Merchants scored three goals in eight minutes to knot the score at three each. Chris McLean, Gord Cawker and Jerry Vallier beat Clay Lover- ing in thé net as the MoJacks appeared dis- organized in their own zone. But Nicholson put the MoJacks ahead for good at 13:46 when he snapp- ed a wrist shot through the Merchant net- minder. On probably the nicest individual effort of the game, Nicholson gave his team a 5-3 lead early in the third when he took a pass from John Vaz, scooted around a Mer- chant defender and flipped the puck to the top left corner. At 13:50, Paul Butter- worth deflected a Rob Sedore shot from the blue line to make it 6-3 and 18:02 Nicholson put the icing on the cake when he drilled a bullet from the top of the face off circle that snared the lower corner. MoJacks enjoyed a territorial advantage for much of the game and out-shot the visitors 40-23. It was a chippy game with a lot of penalties on both sides and several minor scuffles. Late in the third period Jeff McColl of the MoJacks squared off with Gord Thompson in a wrestl- ing match and both got the game misconducts for their effort. McColl, who joined the team three weeks ago, is turning into a first rate performer along the blue line and doesn't let anyone push him around. MoJacks also got nice efforts out of Brad Flaxman who recently joined the team, and Bob Horton who is coming off the injury list. Defenseman Kevin Trapp is showing improvement with every game and is helping the club. In Port Hope last Thursday night, Mo Jacks got goals from Jeff Johnstone, Mike Ryan and Joe Nicholson but the first place Panthers took a 4-3 victory to hang onto their lead in first place. There were just nine minor penalties called in this game, five to the MoJacks. Even though the team has struggled through 'he first 14 games of the season and is in last place, one point behind Cobourg, Sunday's win over the Merchants is . an indication that the fortunes may brighten in the second half of the- schedule. Five of the nine de- feats so far have been by a single goal and one was by two goals. Injuries have hurt the team so far. Bob Horton is back in the line-up but rugged Vaughan McKee is still out with a shoulder injury and Rob Malcolm has a viral infection. McKee will be back in uniform in a few weeks but Malcolm may be out for the rest of the season. This Friday night, MoJacks play the hot MoJacks sharp with 7-3 victory and cold Muskies in Lindsay and then host the Lakefield Chiefs Sunday night at the Scugog Arena. In other action over the weekend, Uxbridge beat Lindsay 8-5 and the Merchants whipped the same Muskies 7-3 in Little Britain.
