People who adjust the volume of their Walk- mans at 8 (almost maximum sound level) cannot hear a car horn within four metres, and could damage their hearing, the research- ers conclude. Volleyball On Sat. Nov. 24 the senior girls volleyball team played against R.H. Cornish, Thora and Joseph Gould. Cart- wright Central lost against R.H. Cornish 2 games to 0 and also they lost 2 games to 0 against Thora. The girls also played Joseph Gould and won 2 games out of 2 games played. Out of the total of 6 games, Cartwright won 2 games. The girls also played Cannington, H.W. Knight and Sun- derland on Nov. 28. On Thursday Nov. 29 the senior boys volley- ball team played in Sunderland against Sun- derland, H.W. Knight, Cannington and Thora. The research team - Audiology and Ortho- phony students from the University of Montreal - examined the decibel range of the Sony Walk- man. They found its minimum level (70 decibels) about equals the droning of a vacuum cleaner, while its max- imum (115 decibels) approximates the screaming of an ambul- ance's siren. The students say the majority of Walkman users listen to their music more than two hours a day at a sound level of 100 decibels, with the volume set at a mid-to-maximum level. Direct consequences of exposure to such noise levels include deterioration of the sensitive cells of the ear. In the short term, the result can be a temporary loss of hear- ing (which could create a noticeable buzzing noise in one's ears and the inability to follow a conversation). Prolong- ed exposure could lead. to permanently impair- ed hearing, and possible deafness. Listening at these levels four hours a day for five days a week would be enough to W. FRANK REAL ESTATE LIMITED 118 WATER STREET, PORT PERRY, ONT. Port Perry 985-7386 Toronto 686-3931 produce deafness among 15 per cent of Walkman users after a year, students claim. Meanwhile, Walk- mans continue to invade factories and offjces - breaking up the mono- tony of work. However, in order to override the loud noise of machines, and to make the sound of music audible, the sound level of the Walk- man has to be more than double the ambient sound level, says Paul- ine Fortier, Audiologist at the Saint-Hyacithe Community Health Centre. In many cases, the resulting sound exposure is equivalent to listening to ten hours Walkmans endanger hearing of discotheque music a day. The wide spread of Walkmans means more and more people run the risk of overexposure to noise. Fortier advises Walkman users: lower the volume to prevent deafness, and avoid use when travelling to pre- vent accidents. » $159,500 -- Prestigious home with over 2900 sq. ft., features 3 walkouts, family room, 3 fireplaces, must be seen. $87,500 -- Custom built, fireplace, walkout from rec room to large lot, tastefully decorated. $77,900 -- Port Perry West, country living on 1 acre, dining room, fireplace, main floor laundry, garage.
