Star Essay Contest Second Place Class B though; because I had never gone with anyone to cut down a Christmas tree before. Just before they were ready to leave, I asked if I could go with them; my dad said that the snow was too deep for me to walk through, and my mother just said that I would - have to watch where I was going. I was so happy that I could now go! When we arrived at our friend's place, the snow was half way up the trees. My dad said that he would make the path to the tree that he was going to cut down, and that the rest of us could follow behind him. My mother walked behind my dad, and I walked behind my mother (I was the last in line). I wanted to see how deep the snow really was, so I stepped off the path that we were on. Down I went, right up to my neck. My mom and dad still kept walking so I yelled: "Mom, Dad, I'm stuck!' I saw them look around to see where I was, so I yelled again: I'm over here. As soon as they saw me they started to laugh, I didn't think it was very funny though, I thought I was there for good. They came running to me and then the next thing I knew they were buried in the snow too. So all three of us started digging ourselves out together. I turned around and I saw my Uncle standing on the edge of the road watch- ing us. Then I heard him yell: '"'Merry Christmas' you 'Three Stooges!" Later on that night when we managed to arrive home safely; we PETRO CANADA compliments of RALPH TAYLOR FUELS had supper and then decided to decorate the Christmas tree. At first I just sat down and watched my mom put most of the decorations on. When she left, I decided to do some decorating. I threw on some balls here and there and started throw- ing on the old tinsel. A piece of it got caught around one of the orna- ments so I tried to pull the tinsel from around it; and the next thing I knew,. the whole Christmas tree was on top of me! The first thing I said was: 'Gee Whiz, what am I going to do now?" I knew if my mother came in and saw the Christmas tree on the floor and decor- ations everywhere in sight, that I wouldn't have to worry about Santa bringing me any- thing for Christmas! When I got up from underneath the Christmas tree, I heard footsteps coming toward me. I ran out to see who it was, of course it just had to be my mother. I ran so hard that I ran right into her and fell flat right on the floor. As I fell I said, "Mom, Mom', I think the Christmas tree fell over from my vibration. She said no way it could, so she went in and looked. Her reactions really made me crack up. She stood there looking at the "undecor- ated" Christmas tree with her mouth wide open and her arms swinging all over the place. I just had to tell her how it really happened. She didn't really get upset but she yelled at me and said: "If you're not burying yourself in the deep snow, then you're pull- ing down my "decorat- ed' Christmas tree! May the light of the season shine on vou this Yuletide. Many thanks, friends. Robert & Carolyn Hall and Family ROBERT HALL MOTORS LIMITED Manchester, Ontario Holiday time presents dangers to toddlers During the Holiday Season, Durham Region Lung Association is war- ning parents to be aware of a potentially hazar- dous combination ---- toddlers and small or- naments or toys. Imagine the scene: a small plastic Santa Claus dangles enticingly on a low bough of the Christmas tree. Your two-year old grabs it, puts it into his mouth, then realizing it isn't can- dy, tries to spit it out. But it cracks, and a piece of the plastic lodges in his windpipe, or is aspirated (inhaled) into his lungs. It's a possible tragedy in the midst of fun, because aspiration of foreign ob- jects is a leading cause of death and injury among children under six years of age. Holiday time, with its bright, brittle or- naments, plastic decora- tions and distracted _ parents is a particularly dangerous period for curious toddlers who in- stinctively grab for ob- jects and put them in their mouths. What can parents do to keep pre-schoolers safe? Durham Region Lung Association suggests: * Do not put tiny or- naments low on the Christmas tree. * Ask Santa to bring The only thing I could say was: "Please don't write a letter to Santa telling him all the bad things I have done." I gave my mom a big hug and a kiss and ran off to bed. presents that do not have button eyes or tiny wheels that may come loose. * Remember that food can also be aspirated, so keep small "finger foods" (such as peanuts and popcorn off low tables, when entertaining. And, remember, that the Lung Association needs your support of the Christmas Seal Cam- paign, to continue its work against lung cancer, asthma, em- physema and occupa- tional lung disease.
