Just check the map, Scugog Township is in the heart of Durham Region. A Winter Carnival would have people travelling from all parts of the Region of Durham to take part in events. Here is a tentative program of events - Hockey games - curling bonspiel - bowling - family skating - Ring- ette - Archery - Ball Hockey competitions - Motorcycle, Go Cart, and horse racing - Horse drawn cutter and sleigh rides - special suppers at all resturants - bean and weiner supper at water front - Winter Parade - Tug of War - Square dancing - Bar- bershop quartets - Snow King, Queen, Prince and Princess Boxing Matches - Antique Gun Show and Auction - Turkey Shoots - the forming of a fifty to seventy five harmonica band, for parades and special events. (See story for details) Dowsons change name and colours Dowson's Red and White Foodmaster will still be independent and family owned, even with a new name and a change in the corporate colours. Over the past few weeks, the food store at Port Perry Plaza has been under-going a series of interior changes that will culminate early in the New Year when the name will become Dowson's Value-mart. Included in the change is a switch in the com- pany colour from red to shamrock green, the ad- dition of an in-store bakery, expansion of the frozen foods section and the moving of the busy courtesy counter away from the front door to a more central location in the store. But manager-owner Ken Dowson told the Star last week that the store will continue to be fami- ly owned and operated bfsiriess, and there is ply no truth to any rumours that it has been bought out by a chain corporation. Mr. Dowson explained that the name change from Red and White to Valu-mart is part of what he described as a "re- alignment in the marketplace" by Na- tional Grocers, the wholesale company which supplies products to Red and White stores and others. About 150 Jarger Red and White Stores across Ontario will be known as Value-mart, while other smaller Red and White stores will be called Freshmart. Mr. Dowson said the change-over has been in the planning stages by National Grocers for the past couple of years. Advertising, window bills, store interiors and even the colour and style of the uniforms worn by staff will be standardized in all the stores affected by the change. Even though the store here had to absorb the costs of new uniforms, signs and renovations, Mr. Dowson said he welcomes the change to Value-mart as it will allow for more com- petitive buying at the wholesale level which in turn will enhance the competitive edge of retail prices on the shelves.
