Meet On December 12, the evening Unit of Nestle- ton U.C.W. enjoyed a delicious Christmas pot luck dinner held at the home of Janice Mac- Kenzie. Following the dinner an inspiring wor- ship was presented by Betty Headon - the Scripture reading taken fron Luke 2: 1-20 - the birth of Jesus. Belty then read a very lovely and Meaningful poem entitled, "A Christmas Alphabet." A small amount of business was discussed and then all We'd like to for your continued TRAVEL DIVA rake this time to say "thank you business, friends!" enjoyed showing a Christmas craft and explained how they had been made. After every- one had a turn Christmas tags were drawn and members exchanged the crafts. The evening ended with lots of carol singing. A lovely time was enjoyed by all present. Annual Christmas Concert - Caesarea Church The annual Christmas concert presented by the Sunshine Club, held on Monday, December 17, 7:30 p.m. was a tremendous success. Special guests for the evening were Brownies and Cubs dressed in their uniforms. The church was packed to the door and extra seating was arranged - but - some had to stand. The youngsters were well trained and all performed well - under the capable direction of Jacqueline McDermott. The excellent pianist for the evening was Mrs. Audrey Beauchamp of Port Perry. Their special €hristmas show was entitled, "The Bright and Morning Star." A very fine entertainment! Rev. W.H. Crawford led in Prayer. After the pre- sentation the children received fruits and candies - and the teachers each rec'd in appreciation for services - a Poinsettia. One and all enjoyed the splendid performance. Congratulations to the leaders and the children! Caesarea Pot Luck and Euchre For the Christmas annual pot luck supper a fine attendance and most delicious food was enjoyed. Afterwards those who were winners are as follows for the Cards. First prize - Richard Miller with 86. Second - Faith Law- rence - 85. Evva Dav- edge was low - 38. Next week the Euchre will be held on Thursday even- ing instead of Wednes- day. See you there! Sort of has a ring to it, doesn't it? "Don't you DARE use that in the paper," threatens the irrepress- ible Mr. Fitches with a grin. "Another news- paper used that express- ion once and I think it's TERRIBLE." The 39 year old cloth- ing designer, whose artistic wearables are currently on display at Scugog Memorial Lib- rary, talks like an exerpt from a Cosmo- politan magazine, punc- tuating his conversation with italic and uppercase letters. His work is much like his grammar---imagina- tive, colourful and load- ed with self-expression. What makes it doubly interesting is how he takes mundane medium -- clothing -- and trans- forms it into something exotic. "The people who buy the things I make AREN'T into a lot of wash "n wear,"" he quipps. And he's right. Unless you've got the cheek- bones of Garbo and the body of Cher, you'd be hard-pressed to look good in many of Fitches' designs. The famous Peacock Dress, in particular, demands a glamourous model, much like the --woman who wore it in a recent fashion show, a half-Ukrainian, half- Irish temptress with wild black hair. '""'She looked like Merle Oberon in Wuthering Heights,"' he recalls. The dress, however, is even more theatrical than the lady who wore 'it. Made from the finest silks in brilliant turg- uoise, the dress is modelled after the bird from which it gets its name. The dress alone is $600. The matching coat is also $600 and the hat is a mere $50. It stands head and shoulders above the other Fitches designs in terms of extravagance, but it is typical of the imagination he injects into each piece--whether it's a coat or a simple day dress. He also uses his fabric talent in more tradition- al forms, wallhangings, that from a distance resemble fine paintings. But his first love is clothing, something that developed in his earliest days when he started making clothes for him- self. Since then he's come to know his way around the sewing machine better than most women and says 'I think the thing that surprises people is that I'm not female." His wife, Betty, likes to point out that the an otherwise world's most renowned tailors have traditionally been men, but it's her that does all the fine hand-stitching on all her husband's designs. Together they have made clothes for Oshawa productions of Camelot and A Man For All Seasons, as well as made-to-order clothes for rich women from the trendiest fashion circles. He's been featured in newspapers like the Globe and Mail and has been interviewed on television shows like CTV's much-watched morning show, Canada AM. : But despite his burgeoning fame, Bill Fitches keeps his day job teaching art in an Oshawa high school as well as his feet on the ground. "Some people go ON and ON about DIVINE inspiration,"' he explains," but I don't. I just DO it because 1 LOVE it."
