In response to recom- mendations of the Durham Region District Health Council, the Ministry of Health has approved $178,878 in stdrt-up and operating costs to establish a 24 hour crisis intervention service at Oshawa General Hospital. The service will respond im- mediately to the needs of individuals in psychiatric and emotianal "distress who come to the Hospital's Emergency Department in search of assistance. The program proposal calls for the "establish- ment of a multi- disciplinary crisis in- tervention team which will be available on a 24 hour basis. Under the direction of a psychiatrist, public health nurses, social workers and psychologists will work together to provide im- mediate clinical assess- ment and initiate early intervention if required. Following the .provi- sion of short-term treat- ment, patients will be referred to appropriate services in the communi- y, to other psychiatric services available at the Hospital, or for more in- tenstive psychiatric con- sultation. The team will also provide follow-up care. "The establishment of ~~ this program will go far in responding to regional mental health priorities identified by the District Health Council," Tom Cowan, Council Chairman. "One of our long-standing concerns said in the area of mental health services has been that assistance for in- dividuals in distress should be available speedily and that ser- vices should be available as close to one's own community as possible. Inappropriate referrals to Whitby Psychiatric Hospital will be reduced and crisis intervention services overall will be delivered more effective ly," Mr. Cowan commented. Jean Achmatowicz, Chairman of Council's Standing Committee on Adult Mental Health Ser- vices, which provided leadership in the development and promo- tion of the proposal, agrees: "We expect the program to have several important effects on the mental health system throughout the Region. In addition to reducing the number of psychiatric admissions to hospitals and reducing the length of stay, the program will make more effective use of our many community agencies and wil] assist in developing crisis intervention skills among health care pro- fessionals in areas such as medicine, social work, psychology, and occupa- tional therapy." Referrals are not restricted to those._.in- dividuals coming to the DERS CHEVROLET - OLDSMOSILE Crisis intervention approved Emergency Depart. ment. The program wil) accept all patients with crisis symptoms resulting from social or chiatric problems, Whither they are self- referrals or are referred by community- Physi- cians or agencies in the community. *"The primary purpose of this service is to alleviate the individual's. distress as quickly as possible and develop a plan to enable the patient to cope with ~ his or her problems ef- fectively and with the assistance of profes- - sionals and community services," Mrs. Achmatowicz added.
