McClelland It could be a long playoff series for the Port Perry MoJacks and Little Britain Merchants. The best of seven quarter final is deadlock- ed at one ga following h Saturday night in Lit- tle Britain, the MoJacks scored with less than three minutes in the game, then added one to an empty net en route to a 6-4 victory. The following night at the Scugog Arena, it was the Merchants turn: for some last minute heroics as they scored twice in the dying minutes of an overtime period to take a 9-8 win from the MoJacks. The game in Port Perry was a wild affair which saw the lead change hands on several occasions. The score was tied 7-7 after 60 minutes of regulation play forcing the ten minute straight time OT period. The MoJacks looked like they might pull another victory out of the fire when Brian Nicholson scored with © 3:27 left to play in the first overtime. He car- ried the puck end to end, circled the cage and jammed the disc into the short-side corner. But the Merchants came scrambling back with 2:40 'left to tie the score when Kevin Barker found the range through a melee in front of Clay Lovering. And they got what pro- ved to be the winner with 1:37 left in OT, again off a scramble in front of the MoJack net when Paul Young swept the puck home. MoJacks yanked Lovering for an extra at- tacker and as the clock ticked away, they came within a whisker of the equalizer when Mike Ryan took a goal-mouth pass and watched as the puck danced off the end of his stick just wide of the post. However, the Mer- chants were full marks for their victory. They carried the play to the MoJacks for much of the game with a strong skating and fore- checking attack and on several occasions put tremendous pressure on the Port Perry netminders. The MoJacks had to rely on their devastating power play which ac- counted for six of their eight markers. The Mer- chants took 17 minors, in- cluding three in the OT period, while the Mo- Jacks were nailed for 11 minor penalties. Despite the rash of minor penalties, this was not a "dirty game,' but it was brisk, hard hitting and crowd pleasing for those who like to see red lights flashing all evening. The MoJack scoring attack led by Brian Joe Nicholson who hit for a hat trick and three assists. Paul Butter- worth picked up a pair of markers, with singles go- ing to Rob Nicholson, Brad Flaxman and Wayne Snodden. For the Merchants, Paul Young, Kevin Barker and Glen Miller each had two goals with singles to Chris McLean, Bruce Barker and Paul Fargo. Game One In the opening game of the series Saturday night in Little Britain, the teams see-sawed back and forth for nearly 60 minutes until Brian Nicholson broke things open at the 17:40 mark of the third when he crusied in from the left side and flipped a back-hand through the pads of Ron Stewart. Jeff Johnstone and Rob Sedore drew the assists. That gave the Mo- Jacks a 5-4 lead and with 55 seconds . remaining, Nicholson scooped up a loose puck in his own end, skated across the centre line and calmly drilled a shot to the mid- dle of the open net for the insurance marker. Ports first game was against Bancroft with Port coming out on top by an 11-2 score. The goal scorers for Port were Jarett Harman 2 goals; Brian Appleby 2 goals and Eric Grosvenor 2 goals. Singles went to Mark Andrews, Clair Cornish, Danny Maw, Sean Bradbury and Jan Heyes. Assists went to Clair Cornish with 3, Dan Maw, Jarett Harman, Mark Andrews, Jan. Heyes, Danny Sluggett and goaltender Paul Kett all got singles. Port vs. Nobleton The Legionnaires se- cond game was against Nobleton and they won the game in sudden death over-time 2-1. Mike Feasby scored first for Port with Jarett Harman assisting. Two minutes - later Nobleton tied it up at one and it was a deadlock for the rest of regulation play. Then the game went into sudden death over-time and it ended as Clair Cornish ripped a hard slap-shot that was knocked down by the goaltender but it kept going and Port ad- vanced . to . the championship. Port vs. East Gwillimburry The championship game was not as ex- pected as Port Perry waltzed away with a 10-2 victory and the tourna- ment award. The scorers for Port Perry were: Clair Cornish 3 goals, 1 assist; Jarett Harman 2 goals, 2 assists; Eric Grosvenor 3 goals; Dan- hit gold " athome & ny Maw 1 goal, Mike Feasby, 1 goal; Sean Bradbury 2 assists; Jan Heyes 1 assist and Paul Teno 1 assist. Hard work by the Legionnaires as they were awarded the gold medalion. Special congratulations to Clair Cornish who was award- ed the M.V.P. of the game, This tournament in Port Perry was spon- sored by Branch 419 of the Royal Canadian Legion, and John Christie was on hand for the medal presentation. PLAYOFFS The Port Perry Legionnaires won their first playoff game against Bowmanville 8-1 and won their second against Uxbridge 104. Uxbridge scored first on- ly three minutes into the first period but Port came back with 8 more goals. Three of them in the first scored by Jarett Harman, Eric Grosvenor and Danny Maw, assists went to Steve Staniland, Jason Towns, Clair Cor- nish and Chris Legere. The other five were scored in the second period, they were scored by Clair Cornish 1 goal, 1 assist; Danny Maw 1. goal; Jarett Harman 3 goals; Chris Legere 1 assist; Sean Bradbury 1 assist and Mike Feasby 1 assist. Uxbridge scored twice then Jarett Har- man scored with Steve Staniland assisting then Uxbridge scored once more. Clair Cornish finished off the scoring with an assisted goal.
