Banks compete for contract with Region The Durham Region 'council's finance com- mittee is recommending a five year agreemnent with the Bank of Com- merce to provide bank- Ing services to Durham. Last July, Durham 'asked the five major Canadian banks to sub- mit detailed banking pro- posals and these were received in October. Staff from the Region's finance department con- ducted a thorough analysis of the proposals and recommended the agreement with the Commerce. Over the next five years, the banking ser- vices provided by the Commerce will cost Durham $21,300. That was the lowest proposal of the five received. The next lowest was $30,200 'by the Bank of Nova Scoti- In a report to Regional council, Jack Gartley, Durham's commissioner of finances states that the "review ensures the Region was receiving all the available services of- fered by the banks that were cost benefical." He predicts there will be "substantial net cost savings over previous practises, particularily in the area of interest earnings on bank balances." The recommendation to give the Commerce a five year contract to pro- vide banking services will be tabled at the regular meeting of Regional council this week for ratifications.
