k 6 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues. February 12, 1985 Jodie Luke places second at Kiwanis Musi The Kiwanis Music Toronto was recently Festival of Greater chatterbox by Cathy Robb : (From page 5) Star editor John B. McClelland nearly had a daughter born on February 14th. "Five years ago, we (J.B. and wife Joan) were thinking maybe Ann would be born on Valen- tine's Day," he says, in a rare mushy moment. '"'She missed being a Valentine's baby by just a few hours." But back in his usual grumbly form, J.B. tells me he has no other memorable Valentine's experience. ; "No, I really can't say as [ do,""' the Scrooge of Hearts admits. "And you can quote me on that. [ wasn't sentimental in those days (has he really changed?, I find this hard to believe). I stopped giving Valentines in Grade Three." Is he some relation to Paul-baby? CHOCOLATE MEMORIES My good pal Marilyn Wood will always remember the dance she went to, where she won a box of chocolates of gargantuan proportions. "It was a huge, huge box, really fancy," Marilyn enthuses. "I think this particular dance had it specially made.' And Star employee Nancy Prentice also has fond chocolate memories of the first time her sweetheart Doug sent her a Valentine. . ~~'... agreat big card. One of the biggest ones you can get," she recalls. "It had a padded heart in front with To My Sweetheart On Valentine's Day. Oh, and a big heart-shaped box of chocolates." "But," says Nancy, "I can't eat chocolates or I break out in zits." | CALORIE FREE . - For Star office manager, Gayle Stapley, her most memorable Valentine's Day has no chocolates in it. Usually her hubby Bob hands over an extra large, extra fattening box of the good stuff to Gayle on February 14th. But she will always remember, "The year my husband gave me a great big bouquet of roses and carnations. This year he'll probably give me a book of Wintario tickets." Sigh. I just love a good romantic story. held in Toronto. Jody Luke, of P Perry, placed second in the 15 years and under solo flute class with a mark of * Greenwood, Katy Haralampides and Kim Hazelwood. Congratulations on an excellent showing! letters Favorite column Dear Sir: I was very pleased, I should say very happy to read in this weeks paper, Metric 'solved (From page5) = (just about one gallon) "short of 100 Imperial . gallons. Any multiple of 2 "metric Gallons" would show a multiple of 9 litres on the pumps. Who but a miser would grumble about a discrepancy of a few odd ounces in small amounts such as 5 or 7 Imperial gallons (in litres: Imp. 22.73, "metric" 22.5; or Imp. 31.82, '"'metric" 31.5)? The. price would still be the same per litre as shown onthe pumps. Sincerely yours, Warren T. McCready Greenbank February 5th, that you are going to continue the 'Remember When' col- umn. When I read you were microfilming yesteryear"s papers, | felt we again would have that very favorite, I believe, of all reader's columns. ' Mr. Hvidsten, may I - suggest I for one, and I'm sure many my age, which is seventy-two, would also like a few lines of fifty years ago . and forty or forty-five years ago. Your paper is the top paper as far as I'm con- cerned for home town news. I'm glad Bill Smiley is writing for you -- his writing brings back memories and smiles. I know of him from Perth, Ontario. These lovebirds left their cages one evening for a romantic dinner for two, complete with flowers, candlelight, and plenty of chow. While the pretty little Corgi cross tucked into her Valentine's feast, her handsome tomcat friend (who was featured in last week's Port Perry Star Family Finder) prepared to blowout the candle ---- all the light they needed was created by the sparks between their eyes. On this Valentine's Day (it's Thursday, February 14th, don't forget), why not surprise your own sweetheart with either of these two pets, or any other animal, from the Scugog- Uxbridge Animal Shelter. The shelter also has a tiger tabby cat and a big, grey neutered tom, with a mark where recent surgery was performed. If you'd like to adopt any of these fur- balls, just call 852-7295.
