Thomp- Playoffs will start by Dawn Korbak As another successful season comes to an end both the PPHS boys basketball teams and the girls volleyball teams are preparing for the playoffs. On Monday the B.B. teams hosted Dunbarton for the final game of their season. Our Sr. and Jr. both ended their season with decisive vic- tories over the Dunbar- ton squads. A well played game by all Sr. members led the team to an outstanding 79-37 victory. However, our midget team put up a good fight but came up on the short end of a 43-35 score. In tournament play the Jr. squad travelled to Lakefield last Saturday where they narrowly beat their host team and consolation winners, Lakefield 5348. It took a strong team from Brighton who went on to win the tournament, 3 overtime periods to final- ly defeat our Jrs. by a 53-50 margin. Lee Wilbur, Jeff Ireland, Dave Burnett, Doug Ar- Tough luck for Novice On Friday night the Pearce Auctioneers con- tinued their round-robin play-off season facing off against the Pickering Panthers. Port Perry's Brent Harper and Scott Heasman both played an excellent game leading 'many of Port's rushes. Brent counted for Port's lone goal "midway through the 1st period, with the assist being credited to defenceman Clay Scott. Good work, boys. Port held the lead un- til midway through the 2nd period when Picker- ing's No.16 put one past our goaltender then 30 seconds later he put in his second of the night ending the score 2-1. MODULAR 4 SERVICING PHILIPS The boys played an all out game with each player trying their very best. Defencemen An- drew Jones and Gavin Carnegie played a very strong game always clearing it out of our end. This was our Ist loss of the playoffs but it also proved to be a hard game to loose as our team out- played their Pickering opponents. However, all 3 teams will compete in LOSSA quarter finals this week. The Sr. girls competed in the McLaughlin Elite Invitational tournament on Saturday where they played the best games of their season. In the first game Port beat LE. Weldon from Lindsay and in an exciting 2nd game Port split with a strong Eastdale team. This game was definite- ly the best of the season. Later in the day our squad was beat by Roberts to end their chances of going on. Good luck to all teams in their playoffs this week. Bantams in three Port Perry Bantam - A's started playoffs with Orangeville on Thurs- day, Feb. 14 and won the best 3 out of 5, in straight games 3-0. In the first game played in Port, Mark Barkey and Greg Stapleton both had "hat tricks'. Assisting on Mark's goals were Phil McBride with two, Greg Stapleton, Mark Elliott and Jamie Menzies with one each. Assisting on Greg's goals were Mark Barkey with three, Steven Connors and Jamie Menzies with one each. Also scoring was Jamie Mehzies assisted by Greg Stapleton and Mark Barkey and An- drew Steele assisted by Derek Fitzgerald. The line with Mark Barkey at centre, Jamie Menzies and Greg Stapleton on the wings had a good night figuring in on all but one goal. Orangeville scored their lone goal early in the first period. Final score 8 to 1 for Port. The second game played in Orangeville on Saturday, Mark Barkey again had a "'hat trick" with Phil McBride and Jamie Menzies getting two assists each and Brad Traves with one. In the third period Greg Stapleton scored assisted by Derek Fitzgerald and Mark Barkey. Jeff Oke also scored assisted by Andrew Steele. Stacey Ballingall earned a shut- out. Final score 50 for Port. The third game played at home on Sunday Port had an easy win 11-1. The big shooter for the night with 4 goals with singles going to Warren Geer, Mark Barkey, Brad Menzies, Dereck Fit- -zgerald and Jeff Oke. Assists went to Jeff Oke with four; Greg Stapleton with four; Warren Geer with two; Phil McBride with two; Brad Menzies with three and singles to Dereck Fitzgerald. Although Port win 3 games straight this was a '"B'" team from Orangeville and Port did not play all that well. Port took a lot of foolish penalties that against a stronger team could be very costly. Port now will have to wait for the next round as the eastern teams are still playing off. Come out and support the boys and see some fine hockey. Juniors tie On Sun. Feb. 3rd, Port Perry Sportsland Juniors hosted Markham in an exhibition game. They came up against a strong team but played one of their best games of the season with a score of 5-5. Scoring for Port were Colleen Yorke with 3 goals assisted by Joane Desautels and Tina Soomre, and Heidi Meisner with 2 goals assisted by Anne Finch and Jessica Fluke. Our Juniors travelled to Little Britain Sat. Feb. 16 to participate in the annual Mariposa Tour- nament. The first game was with Stayner and each girl played an ex- cellent game ending with a 91 win. Scoring for Port were Heidi Meisner 5, assisted by Jessica Fluke; Colleen Yorke, Joanne Desautels; Val White 2, assisted by Sherry Harris and Joanne Desautels; Tina Soomre 1, assisted by Sherry Harris; Sherry Harris 1, assisted by Tina Soomre. The pass- ing and checking were right on, resulting in a great team effort! The second game was a very hard fought one against Mariposa at Oakwood Arena. This game had to be won by Port in order to continue on in the tour- nament on Sunday and the girls really felt the pressure. They gave it everything they had but lost by a score of 84. Scoring for Port were Colleen Yorke 1, assisted by Val White and Heidi Meisner 3, assisted by Kim Loudfoot and Vicki Reid.
