Resignation sparks no MP comment Durham Northumber land MP Allan Lawrence has declined to commen publicly on the resigna tion last week of Conser vative Defense Ministel Robert Coates. Contacted by the Stal late last week, a spokesperson for Mr Lawrence said the MF had "no comment' or the resignation. Mr. Coates stunned the House of Commons earlier last week wher he said he was stepping down as Defense Minister after public allegations that he and two aides visited a strig club last November near the Canadian Forces Base at Lahr, West Germany. - Mr. Coates has launch- ed a libel suit against the Ottawa newspaper which first made public the allegations that he and his two aides visited the strip club for about an hour and talked to one of the dancers who works there. While Mr. Lawrence declined to comment on the resignation, Joel Aldred of Scugog Township, a longtime friend of Mr. Coates told the Star that he doesn't think the Defense Minister's resignation was "totally necessary." Mr. Aldred, who described Mr. Coates as "a very old and good friend," added however, that he doesn't think the Minister "should have been in a place (the strip club) like that. It was poor judgement on his part." Mr. Coates and Mr. Aldred were both very loyal to the late John Diefenbaker when he was leader of the na- tional Conservatives, and Mr. Coates is the author of a 1969 book detailing the messy upheaval when the Par- ty ousted Mr. Diefenbaker. Describing Mr. Coates as a man whose "word is his bond," Mr. Aldred suggested he was a "vic- tim of circumstances" concerning the resignation. And noting that Mr. Coates has launched a civil court action to clear his name, Mr. Aldred said there is no reason why he could not return to the Conservative Cabinet in the future. "lI think the Armed Forces will be poorer because of his lack of presence. He always felt the Forces were under- manned and under- equipped, and he was taking steps to change this," said Mr. Aldred who saw active duty with the Canadian Air Force during World War Two.
