AI Sra FT 1 JTRS ---- ane, pire 24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues. February 26, 1985 BANTAM by Don Hurst With the strike well over at the race track - the Cochrane Trotter's got their act together after falling from first place all the way to the basement - today handed the 1.G.A. a hard fought win 64. Bobby Orr got 1.G A. an early lead - about 1:15 into the game - but Jim Vernon got that one back after taking a pass from Slack - first period over a 1-1 tie. In the second period both teams exchanged goals and the period end- ed 2-2. This was a close checking period and you just knew that it was go- ing to be wide open soon. Jerry Douma scored for 1.G.A. - while Vernon got his second from Diceman and Haist. The third period broke wide open, as Vernon scored again from Halligan then Al Shepstone and Chris Carr gave 1.G.A. a 43 lead then Marvin Hughes on a pass from Slack and Vernon tied it up 44 apiece. Jim Ver- non got his fourth goal of the day, and then picked up an assist along with Slack on Frank Van Veghel's goal - final score 6-4 for the Horsemen. Consumers Gas - 5 Emmersons - 1 This was the hockey game that brought Con- sumers two points closer to Emmersons for first place. This hockey game ~ was a close, hard check- ing game and good pass- ing by both teams. David Irvine right off the face off, broke in and beat Mike Enzi on the glove side, and you could almost say here we go again - Consumers Gas had a different idea how the out-come was to be as Mike Stanley broke past Logan on defense after taking a pass from Turner. Period over 1-1 .ie. Both teams tried but to no avail could they get the go ahead goal - and it wasn't till the third period that Darryl Bradt put the Gas Works ahead - with Free and Jackman assisting. In the last five minutes a lot of contact was being made and this resulted in penalties for both sides - but the Gas Works made use of the chances as Adam Danter on a pass from Bradt, Jason Bertrand who just likes to score against his former coach added one from Solomon. Then Roane sent a rink wide pass across to Mike Grif- fen who made no mistake, final 5-1 Con- sumers Gas. PEE WEE If Saturday morning's two games are any in- dication, we are in for an exciting playoff schedule. The four team match up Saturday will also be the match up for the 1st Round of playoffs, which will be a best 2 out of 3, with the 2 winners advancing to the finals, also a 2 out of 3. In the 1st game, 4th place Lions (15 points) defeated 2nd place W. Frank (19 points) by a 3-1 score. The second game of the day saw 1st place Larocque (26 points) defeat 3rd place Scala (16 points) by a 3-2 score, Both games saw end-to end action and excellent goaltending by all four teams. If all 4 teams play as hard as they did on the _ckend, the next month should be an excellent ending to another hockey season. Good luck to all four teams. Lions -3 Frank - 1 Scoring for the Lions Club, Daryl Duthewich - 1 goal and 1 assist; Craig Leask - 1 goal, and 1 assist; Mark Shephard 1 goal and Herb Hatch 1 assist. For W. Larocque - 3 Scala - 2 Scoring for Larocque, Mark Tomkiewicz, Glen Whitaker and Todd Saulnier each with singles with assists going to Gord Ireland (2) and Jeff Labanovich. ATOM PLAYOFF ROUND ROBIN GAME NO. 1 Gord Lewis Motors - 5 Swamp Auto Body - 4 Gord Lewis Motors downed Swamp Auto Body 5-4 in the first match of the Round- ~ Robin Playoff series. Swamp took an early 3-0 lead in the first period. Mike Olaisen opened the scoring assisted by Mike Tripp. Mike Williams then notched two, the se- cond from Misty An- drews. Andy Wilson put Lewis Motors on the scoreboard twice, both assisted by Jeff Kemp. Chad Brown also picked up an assist on the se- cond Wilson goal. It was 3-2 at the end of the first period. End to end action saw no scoring in the se- cond period, and it wasn't until 5 minutes had elapsed in the third that Chad Brown tied the game for Lewis, after taking a-lead pass from Andy Wilson. Swamp came right back and took the lead on a fine effort by Mike Williams (his hat trick). Chad Venning was awarded the assist. Thirteen seconds later, Andy Wilson scored the tying goal, unassisted. Wilson then put the game on ice for Lewis with four minutes remaining in the period (his fourth of the day). Swamp was unable to get the equalizer and went in to defeat. UAW. -8 Lake Scugog Lumber - 1 The second match-up of the afternoon proved to be a one-sided affair as U.A.W. easily defeated Scugog Lumber 8-1. The lumbermen skated well in the first period allow- ing only one goal. Steven Slade gave his team the lead at the mid-point of the period. U.A.W. found the target 3 times in the second period, with Steve Slade notching two more and Bill Sandiford a - single. Assists went to Scott Foster and Robert McEachern. Scugog Lumber appeared to be running out of legs in the 3rd as Bill Sandiford scored early, unassisted. But finally, midway in the period, Scott Wylie pounded one home for the lumbermen assisted by Simon Traynor. But the lion was then arous- ed and UAW. came back with 2 more. Robert McEachern scored from Steve Slade, then Slade notched his fourth of the day from Phil Edgar, with Edgar firing the final tally of the day past a busy Scugog Lumber netminder Kevin Ellis, with 40 seconds remain- ing on the clock. Don Forder Ins. - 6 Tripp Realty - 4 This exciting see-saw battle ended in a 6-4 win for Don Forder In- surance over Tripp Real- ty. Forder scored just 44 seconds into the 1st period as Ross Stainton fed Ryan Ridgeway for the goal. A minute later, Darren Hope tied the match at one on an unassisted effort. Both Petites vs parents On Sat. Feb. 23, the Bruton's 1.D.A. Petites hosted their parents in an exhibition game which saw a few spills, a lot of laughs an odd set of uniforms on the parents and a fun time!! The parents opened the scor- ing on a goal by Marg Pelow from Rob 'The Clown' Cooper. It took only a few seconds before Misty Andrews from Lyndsay Dutkewich had tied the game. They again scored - Lyndsay from Jennifer Morden and held this lead most of the first period before Lloyd 'The Monk' Morden unassisted tied the score. Again it was only seconds before Archie Andrews from Barry 'No Name' Beare put us in the lead. It wasn't long before Tanya Towns from Christina Mueller; Denna Lovering from Nicky Beare; and Misty Andrews had made the score 5-3 at the end of the first period. The parents started off the second 7 teams split the scoring the second per.. r- ren Hope notched his se- cond of the day for Tripp Realty with Wade Sheedy scored for Forder assisted by Daryl Slack. The third period was wide open, as the red light flashed six times. Tripp went ahead mid- way in the period on a solo effort by Ryan Picard. Forder tied the game when Mike Staniland scored from Robin Brown. Fifty seconds later the in- period with a goal by Lloyd Morden from Barry Beare and Bruce 'The Boss' Poppleton. Lyndsay Dutkewich put the petites 2 ahead again but her mother, Joan from Lloyd and Rita Finley -brought us to within 1 goal again. Den- nis Towns from Rob Cooper tied the match and Joan Finley from Bruce put us in the lead. It is a good thing the horn blew when when it did. The petites had something planned for us!! The parents were helpful in this win by our goalie Mary Andrews ~ Port Perry Minor Hockey House Leagues surancemen took the lead when Brendon Agnew picked up Mike Staniland's pass and put the puck past Tripp's An- drew Roberts. Chris Machold put his team even, scoring an unassisted goal with four minutes remaining. But it took Robin Brown just 20 séconds to knock in the winning goal after pick- ing up Mike Staniland's rebound. Brendon Agnew notched the in- surance marker to give Forder the victory. who was able to stop a lot of the shots. Not bad for a first-time goalie! A special thanks to Janice Lovering, Joan Pop- pleton, Nancy 'Long John' Morden and Burk Mueller who donned their skates and helped 'us finally beat the petites. We have been trying for years!!
