(From page 1) been chairman of the Durham council plann- ing committee. He is also a member of the Region's Social Ser- vices committee, the Board of Health, an ex- ecutive of the South Lake Simcoe Conservation Authority, and the cur- rent president of the Durham Non Profit Housing Corp. Mr. Hadden has been active in non-political community affairs in- cluding president of Sunderland Minor Hockey; president of Sunderland Co-op; presi- dent of the Durham Federaticn of Agriculture and an ex- ecutive memoer of the provincial Federation. With family members, he operates a 500 acre dairy farm, about four miles south of Sunderland, a farm which has been in his family since 1878. The riding of Durham- York has not exactly been fertile ground for provincial Liberals in re- cent years. In fact, Con- servative incumbent Ross Stevenson polled more votes than the | Will run for Liberals & Liberal and NDP can- didates combined in the 1980 election. However, Mr. Hadden says he will be anything but a token candidate and if he gets the nomination will run a high profile, well- organized campaign. "I'm prepared to give this all the effort and hard work I can, and so far the response has been positive," he told the Star. He said he has been thinking about moving into the provincial arena for some time and made up his mind to seek the nomination after meeting two weeks ago with officials of the riding executive. Mr. Hadden is married and he and his wife, Helen, have four children. He is the second can- didate to publicly an- nounce intentions to seek party nominations in Durham-York. Marg Wilbur will be after the nomination for the New Democrats, and it is ex- pected that Ross Steven- son will carry the Con- servative colours when the election is called. Police ask 5.9% hike The Durham Region Police force is seeking a 5.9 per cent increase for its 1985 budget. If approved by the Regional council some time next month, the new police budget will be $22.76 million for 1985. The calls for service across Durham increas- ed last year by just over 11 per cent, with the most rapid increase coming in "the. urbanized areas along the Lake Ontario shoreline. To meet this increased demand for service, the Police budget is seeking funds to hire eight new officers: three for Pickering, three for Oshawa, one for Whitby and one for the fraud squad. The police force is also looking for $37,000 for training a tactical sqad to handle hostage taking incidents, which ap- parently are on the in- crease in Durham as well. Durham Police force receives its operating "funds for three sources: about $17.4 million will come from the property tax payers in the Region; about $5 million comes from per capita grants handed out by the provin- cial government; and the remainder from the sale of such things as acci- dent reports.
