6 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues. February 24, 1985 letters Happy ending to a very messy incident 'Dear Sir: My husband and | recently experienced a famous Port Perry sewer backup. It all "started on a Wednesday 'when we came home from a hard day at work and walked right into a smelly mess, I'll tell ya it sure doesn't make your day. Like a good wife | am, I went straight upstairs to fix supper (of which we didn't feel like eating anyways) and left my poor husband to clean up the mess. Well, while he was down in the base- ment with the cap off the toilet stack pipe, I ac- 'cidentally flushed it. Have you ever tired to stop something after its already started? At first I let on nothing happen- ed. After a while I gathered all my courage up and quietly tiptoed downstairs to find amongst the blue air my wet, smelly little hus- band just sitting there ready to kill me. Sudden- ly I became very brave and said 'Why don't we rent a worm' (that's plumbing talk for a thing that goes through the pipes to clean them out), 50 in keeping with the kind of day we were hav- ing the rental in Port Perry was closed so off my poor, wet Donnie went to rent one at Millwork in Oshawa. By the way we moved from the Island so we wouldn't have this sort of problem. Ha Ha! He gets home an hour later and went straight to work screwing that funny thing into the pipes to no avail. You know this all started because my favourite mother-in-law bought me a washer and dryer for Christmas. God bless her and I couldn't even use it after waiting for 25 years to get one. Then 1 got the bright idea of phoning a plumber. Well apparently he was kind of busy but he did confirm quote 'You do have a bit of a problem' reasons to do so. Letters to the Editor policy It has always been the policy of this newspaper to encourage our readers to make use of the letters to the editor column. Our readers have a right to freely express their opinions and viewpoints on just about any subject, and we feel that a lively letters column helps make a better community newspaper. We insist, however, that a letter writer sign his or her name. On rare occasions, we will agree to with-hold publication of a letter writer's name, if we feel there are very good Under no circumstances. will this paper print an anonymous letter to the editor mw While, we enjoy receiving letters from' our readers, we must continue to insist on know- ing the identity of the writer. Low unquote. He said he'd be here the next day or even the day after that. We waited for 2 days for this plumber and decided to phone another one, Ken Rankin had the honours. He told us right off to phone Durham Region Works Department that they would be able to help us. So here we are late Friday night walk- ing our fihgers through the Blue Pages of the telephone book looking for the emergency numbers. Have you ever had the misfortune of having to look through the Blue Pages for anything, well they drive you nuts! We were just about ready to pull our hair out when Don notic- ed a number that might help us in Oshawa. Well we phoned it and got im- mediate action. They would send somebody down right away. In they came banging down the stairs with a big machine and umpteen coils of springs or rods as they are formally called through the pipes for over an hour 90 feet in all. We'll be back tomor- row they said and we'll try again and don't flush your toilet. It's annoying how many times you find you have to go when you can't flush. By this time its Saturday and prompt- ly at 9 o'clock a different crew walked in and went straight to work trying to get those stupid things out of my pipes and after two hours they were worse off than when they started. To put the icing on the cake, the one that went through last broke right off at the opening. Now we were really in trouble. They said they would have to dig outside and maybe tear up most of my paved drive. Ap parently we didn't have the proper 4 inch clean out pipe in the basement if we did the rods wouldn't have got stuck in the first place. A lesson to us all, make sure you have a proper clean out pipe before calling the Works Department. They spent most of the day locating my sewer pipe with a detector to see in which direction it went. Finally, they decided to dig right in front of my house on the grass part thank goodness. By this time it's Monday morning like 8 o'clock early. They have to remove all the snow that my snow plow guy has been piling up so neatly all winter before they can dig. I'll tell you that gravel sure is frozen. It took them awhile but they finally got to my sewer pipe 10 feet down (it'll never freeze) it's still intact or it was until they started sawing it away so they could find their rods. There they are laying in there so neatly like they're supposed to be there. The rods came out pretty easy after a few yanks. They rejoin the pipes where they were cut with a brand new plastic one and by Wednesday. the hole is covered in and I now have a big mound of frozen dirt in front of my house. Oh, well, we were thinking of landscaping there this year or at least we were talking about it. The moral to this story is find a plumber who will direct you in the right direction in the first place and call the Durham Works Depart- ment, when you have a sewer backup. In most instances it's free or sort of, thats what your taxes are paying for. I want to thank all of you who work for the Region. You are a nice bunch of guys, courteous and prompt. P.S. my pipes are all - cleaned out now the hard way. Yours truly, Bev Silverman, Port Perry. Flawless show Dear Sir: Through the years, from meagre beginnings during the 70's, the Borelians Community Theatre of Port Perry has developed into an auspicious organization, surely a formidable one among its peers. I am certain the adjudicator who is scheduled to be there on Thursday night will have a difficult time attemp- ting to remain totally ob- jective throughout this splendid experience. To those who have not yet seen this production, I truly urge them to do so. You're in for a treat. It's flawless. Yours truly, Leslie A. Parkes, Port Perry.
