RETA mp mn ---- - SE che PY Region brochure gets criticism Reaction has been mixed to a new brochure which plugs the in- dustrial potential of Durham Region. Regional councillors had a look at the. brochure last week, which is called *'A Case For Durham," and features a large styleized D on the front cover in the form of a sun rising over the Region. The brochure was pro- duced at a cost of about $41,000 with the money coming to Durham in- directly from Ontario Hydro as part of a finan- cial deal between the utility, Durham and Newcastle, site of Hydro's latest show- piece, the Darlington nuclear station. But it wasn't the cost of the brochure that had some councillors hopping mad last week. Newcastle Mayor Grant Rickard was especially upset that a map showing the in- dustrialized areas of southern Ontario includ- ed most of Ajax, Picker- ing, Whitby and Oshawa, but did not include much of his municipality. "Who designed this? Who put this thing together? I think it is an insult to my municipali- ty," said an exasperated Mayor Rickard. Whitby councillor Tom Edwards also had some harsh words for the brochure, calling it "a waste of taxpayers _ money that won't do a darn thing for Durham Region." However, the design and contents of the brochure were strongly defended by councillor Don Hadden, chairman of the planning commit- tee which had a hand in approving the final drafts prepared by a Toronto consulting company. "We wanted something different from all the pretty pictures you see in other brochures. It is a unique concept that makes a lot of sense. Business is not interested in pretty pic- tures. It wants data and facts," he said. Councillor Hadden ad- mitted that leaving Newcastle off ue map as an industrial area was an unfortunate oversight that will be corrected in subsequent printings of the brochure. And after listening to the criticism of the brochure, councillor Hadden had a few words of his own for the critics. "You're being negative. The worst negative publicity about the Region comes right out of this room (council chambers). There is bound to be criticism no matter what kind of brochure we come up with," he said, adding the Region should make the best of it and get on with some positive promotion. While Newcastle Mayor Rickard was scathing in his criticism, councillor Ann Cowman from Newcastle said she felt the brochure was well done, aside from the mapping mistake. The brochure, with a bright yellow cover and four small drawings of the rising D, is not like most publications that push industrial or com- mercial development in an area. - It does not have a lot of pretty pictures of smil- ing, happy people on the beach or at the curling club. Instead it features some general informa- tion about Durham, and several 'first person" stories about specific in- dustrial success stories in Durham, including General Motors, Mikita Tools, DuPont, Tokai Lighters and Ontario Hydro plants at Picker- ing and Darlington. The purpose of the brochure is to generate interest in the Region, especially in attracting new industry here. While it contains some hard facts about hydro rates, land costs and transpor- tation facilities, it makes it clear that anyone look- ing for more specific in- formation must contact the Region's develop- ment department.
