Eager travellers prepare for north Now tell the truth, isn't a Narwhale tusk what you've always wanted? "Maybe ravens' feet are more your style, or polar bear teeth. How about a duck wing duster? These useful trinkets, along with more domestic exotica like antlers, are just a few of the souvenirs sent to a group of Port Perry High School students from their friends inthe Great White North. And we're talking NORTH, here. The folks doing the sending are an en- thusiastic group of Inuit teenagers living in a small community called Clyde River on the east coast of Baffin Island in the Northwest Terri- tories. In April, 15 students from PPHS will travel to Clyde River and spend a week billeted with their Inuit peers, learning all they can about a com- pletely different way of life. Then it's the Inuit students' turn to come to Port Perry for a week, where they'll be in- troduced - to the high school and local attrac- tions, as well as the sights and sounds of Toronto. In the meantime, both sets of teenagers have been swapping letters and all sorts of memorabilia, hoping to learn as much as they possibly can about each other even before they meet. The Port Perry team has sent Christmas greetings with personal resumes, copies of the Port Perry Star and a sophisticated videotape with '"'performances" from each student. In the next week or so they'll be shipping off a gallon of maple syrup to their nor- thern friends, along with a collection of ap- propriate recipes. " The cost of the ex- change trip has been partly looked after by government funding, but students managed to raise approximately $2,000 on ticket sales for an Inuit soapstone sculpture, created by an artist in Lake Harbour, Baffin Island Worth somewhere between $800 and $1,000, the beautiful "spirtual bird" was won by PPHS student Erik Kiezebrink. With the first leg of the trip just a month away, students are eagerly looking forward to their adventure in the Arctic, although one student was overheard saying, 'If we do this again next year, can we go to Florida?"
