20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 12, 1985 Sports Port Tweens are Regional champs ~ This past weekend, the Chris Allen Aluminum Tweens became the Regional 'B' Champions. ~ The tournament was held in Sunderland, and our first game was Sat. morning at 8 o'clock against Woodville. Port came out strong, scoring 5 goals before Woodville got on the scoreboard. However, the tables turned and Woodville scored 5 goals in 9 minutes, to tie it up. Port kept trying and the post, but we had to settle for the tie. Kerri Allen played a super game in net mak- ing some key saves in the last few minutes. Scoring was handled by Michelle Beare with 2 goals, 1 assist; ~ Heather Lawrence 1 goal, 1 assist; Lisa Levy and Jenny Blanchard each Ernestown forward makes a rush on the Port Perry net where Stacey Ballingall stands guard during Ban- tam playoff action at the Scugog Arena Saturday even- ing. The visitors doubled Port Perry 4-2, but the next Hazel Beare put one off \ [84 Bantams keep it alive No luck at Regional Playdowns Over the past weekend our two rep teams, Utica Farm Equipment and Beacock's Hdwe. par- ticipated in the Regional Playdowns, but didn't fare nearly as well as last year when they were both silver medallists in their respective divi- sions. In the elite division Utica went down to defeat two straight in the tough competition, while Beacock's managed to make it to fourth place in the Intermediate division. Friday night saw one of the finest games of ball played in some time as Utica tackled last Canoe the Nonquon '85 Paddles ready? Plans are moving ahead for the 1985 ver- sion of Canoe the Non: quon, but race chairper- son Claudette Brock says the organization is still looking for volunteers to fill some important positions. An organizing meeting was held March 7 at the Township office, and Mrs Brock says the turn-out was very en- couraging, especially with the number of younger people who are showing an interest in the famous race "We are still looking for people to run the canoe raffle and to help with publicity," Mrs Brock told the Star following the meeting last week Canoe the Nonquon 1s in its 17th year and as always, will be held the first Saturday in June with participants -paddl- ing a 20 mile course along the Nonquon River and down Lake Scugog to the finish at the Port Perry waterfront The event is a major fund-raiser for the year's provincial champs and this year's regional champ, Figure Design Rangers. This game was meant to be played in the champion- ship and it's too bad there had to be a loser. With Don Card tending the goal, the score was 0-0 after regulation time Scugog Shores Museum, and last year's race pumped about $2500 into the Museum's operating budget Registration will be held the evening before the event and up to 10:00 am. on the morning of June 1 The next organiza- tional meeting will be held at the Township of- fice on Perry Street on April 4, and Mrs. Brock says anyone interested in + helping with this year's race will be more than welcome Broomball teams bow out and went into the 5 minutes total goal over- time. Again the teams were close with Rangers coming out on top 3-2. Utica's goals came off the brooms, of Aldon Smith and Kevin Ibbitt- son, with Murray and Chester Down picking up the assists. In their second game on Saturday evening Utica built up a 2-0 lead over Georgetown Grizzlies only to see it fade away to a 3-2 loss. Bart Wagar, unassisted, and Ibbittson from Bruce Smith accounted for the scoring. In the Intermediate Division Beacock's played a total of 4 games before bowing out in the semi final on Sunday morning. In their first game Friday night they dumped Fraserville 5-1 as Steve: Hawes from Laval Poulin, Ron Red- man from Tim Cochrane, Dave Dalton from Terry Black, Cochrane from Rick Alpe, and 3lack from Wayne McGuigan did the damage. On Saturday morning they met even- night in Ernestown, Port Perry fought back with a 8-7 overtime to push the series to a fifth and deciding game. That one will go this Wednesday night at the Scugog Arena, and it should be a good one. tual silver medallist Shelburne and squeaked out a 3-1 score. Shelburne gave the team a scare when they scored just 13 seconds into the game. The guys fought back for the win on goals from Alpe, Black and Hawes. Saturday night the Beacock"s team were blanked 3-0 by gold medal winners Alliston Drifters for their first loss. In the semi final on Sunday they again met Shelburne, and after regulation time were deadlocked at 0-0. Blackstock struck first when Rick Alpe set up Ron Wagg but it wasn't enough as Shelburne came back with 2 of their own. In the dying seconds the team tried desperately to force a se- cond overtime period but it wasn't to be In upcoming playoff action Utica and Blackstock go head to head in game two of the finals this Sunday after- noon at 5:00. Utica has a 1 game lead in the best of 3 series after winning 3-1 a week ago scored one goal, while Connie Norton, Cindy Harris, Nicole Slack and Rachel Traynor each picked up 1 assist. Our next game was Sat. night and we had to beat Ajax by at least 2 goals, to place first in our pool. Although we had 22 minutes in penalties, we managed to score 4 goals to Ajax's 1. --__ Kerri Allen in net, and our defence of Nicole, Jennifer, Cindy and Michelle proved too strong for Ajax. Jenny Blanchard and Michelle Beare each scored 1 goal, 1 assist; Jackie Durham and Lisa Levy put the ring in once, while Heather Lawrence picked up 1 assist. This win put us in first... place in our pool, so next we played the 2nd place team in the other pool, Oshawa. This was a close, end to end game, with Port coming out on top by a score of 5-3. Kerri Allen had a super game in net, with lots of help from her defence. Jenny Blan- chard scored 4 goals; Lisa Levy scored 1 goal; Nicole Slack picked up 2 assists; while Rachel, Melissa, Heather, Cindy and Snortin Norton each picked up 1 assist. This put us into the championship game against Woodville. The prettiest goal of the tour- nament was scored by Heather Lawrence on a great passing play with Jenny Blanchard and Melissa Moehring. This goal opened the scoring giving us a 1-0 lead. Jenny Blanchard scored her first of the game, assisted by Jackie Durham. Woodville scored the next goal, nar- rowing our lead to one. Lisa Levy finished off the scoring in the first period, assisted by Jackie and Nicole. This made it 3-1 for us, going into the second period. Woodville scored again, but 30 seconds later Jenny scored her second goal, from Rachel making it 4-2. Woodville scored the next goal, but Lisa Levy scored from Jenny and Cindy making it 5-3. Woodville made it 54 with 2:40 left, and tied it up with 1:43. Jenny Blan- chard finished off her hat trick with the winning goal at 1:17, assisted by Jennifer Pelow. Kerri Allen stayed strong in net in the final minutes and the defencemen did an ex- cellent job of killing the time. The buzzer went, and Port Perry Tweens were the champions. Congratulations girls! We are sorry that Crazy-Legs Calloway and Kim Caudle couldn't make it, and we hope you had a good time! All set for kicks Soccer season is just around the corner and the Scugog Youth Soccer Club Executive have finalized some dates to remember. Soccer registration will be at the Latcham Centre on March 30 and 31; the Mini teams start as young as children born in 1980. Soccer pro- vides an excellent begin- ning to the world of team sports for the young child. The House League teams go up to age 16 for both boys and girls. The Clubs' Head Coach 1s looking for coaches and assistant coaches Anyone interested in coming out to help the Club could contact Carl Stewart at 985-8364 or Bob Ervine at 985-7096 A Level I Coaches Clinic willl be held April 27 and 28 and a Level II Coaches Clinic March 30 and 31; both will be taught at the Harwood Secondary School. Head coach Carl Stewart has further information for anyone who would like to attend either Clinic. The Scugog Youth Soc- cer Club is hosting a Referees Clinic at the Anglican Church Hall on April 20. A Bond has been paid to the Durham Region Youth League should the club decide to enter one or more Boys Com- petitive Bantam or Pee Wee teams into that league.
