The Port Perry club will be co-ordinating the Cystic Fibrosis Radiothon, "The Fight of a Lifetime,' April 6, 1985 on CKAR 1350. This CF Radiothon will be part of a series to be produced across Canada by Toron- to broadcaster, Bill Robinson and co- ordinated by The Association of Kinsmen Clubs. The shows will feature dozens of international celebrities such as sports figures Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr and Gary Carter, and comedy stars Joan Rivers and Rich Little. Many of your favourite recording ar- tists will also be heard. Kenny Rogers, Crystal Gayle, Platium Blonde and Burton Cummings are just a few of the names from that list. With such a star-filled cast, there is little doubt that the CF Radiothon will provide Port Perry's most entertaining "Radio Day of the Year." As well, it pro- mises to inform listeners about one of our lesser known diseases. Lesser known perhaps, but se- cond only to cancer in taking young lives. The national Radiothon concept was created by Bill Robinson who will also act as the National Host of the Show. "We would never have got the idea off the ground if it weren't for Barry Snetsinger of Labatt's and Blackie Hoffman of Speedy Muf- fler King,"" Robinson says. '""They saw the tremendous potential of this concept to help CF kids and threw their cor- porate support behind us. They offered not only their money, but also some of the most creative minds in the country! We believe that these Radiothons could well fund the final CF research project. The one that finds the cure for cystic fibrosis." Robinson's involve- ment with CF was in- itiated by a listener to his evening program on a Toronto radio station. In the spring of 1982, Kathy Price, a parent of a child with Cystic Fibrosis, con- tacted Bill to enlist his support in publicizing the tragic realities of this disease. "I interviewed Kathy the day I received her - letter," said Robinson. "Had everything gone smoothly, that would have been the end of it. But I kept confusing CF with the other 'letter' diseases such as MS, MD Seagrave area news and CP." Checking with his friends and associates, Robinson found an equai lack of knowledge about this disease. Shortly thereafter, Kathy sent Bill a picutre of her 7 year old twin girls, Shannon and Wen- dy. Shannon has CF. "That was it!" said Robinson. And his com- mitment to helping Shan- 'non and other young peo- ple afflicted with CF began. With Kathy's help, Bill created the first CF Radiothon in September of 1982. They expect to do at least 40 this year from coast to coast. 'Can you imagine," Robinson says, "the gifts these CF kids will give back to the community when they are living into their 40's, 50's, 60's and beyond? Put all that love into the world for an extra 40 years, and there's no tell- ing what the results will be!" Life Expectancy In the past 25 years, life expenctancy for a child with CF has in- creased by over 500 per- cent from 4 to 20 and beyond. "I'm no resear- cher," Robinson says, "but we are so tantaliz- ing close. Canada is a world leader in CF research. As a result, Canadian kids with CF are living longer and better lives than in any other country. Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disease. One in 20 of us carries the gene. Therefore, in Port Perry alone, there are an estimated 250 people who could have the defective CF gene. These people are healthy in every way but should they marry another carrier, there is a 25 per cent chance that they will have a cystic child. ---Simply put, Cystic Fibrosis results in a thick mucus being formed that covers the lungs and digestive system, great- ly decreasing their effi- ciency. Other complica- tions arise out of these problems. Persistent lung infections, an ex- cessive appetite but loss of weight, and an ex- cessively salty taste to the skin are some in- dicators of the disease. The CF Radiothon, "The Fight of a Lifetime," will be heard April 6, 1985 8:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. on CKAR 1350. The project is made possible by the sponsor- ship of Labatt"s and Speedy Muffler King and the support of the Port Perry Kinsmen, radio station CKAR and the Port Perry Star. Deer facing dogs at large The season's heavy snowfall in several areas of the province has ag- gravated the annual pro- blem of dogs chasing deer, says Ontario's largest provincial con- servation organization. The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters is reminding dog owners that deer can be killed by normally docile domestic pets that are allowed to run free. In winter, deer are often severely weakened by the combined stresses of cold weather and a shortage of food. They are easy prey when deep snow prevents their escape from marauding dogs. Any attempt to outrun the dogs is physically exhausing for the deer and frequently futile. When a dog cat- ches a deer, its attack can be savage. In fact, the pet does not actually need to catch the deer to kill it. Often the chase itself weakens the deer enough that it dies later. The 49,000 member On- tario Federtion of Anglers and Hunters urge all dog owners to confine their pets to minimize the harm to area deer. It is illegal, under the GAME AND FISH ACT, to permit dogs to run at large dur- ing the closed season for deer in an area in which deer are usually found. The offense carries a fine of up to $5,000. In addi- tion, any dog observed harassing deer can be shot on sight by Ministry of Natural Resource's conservation officers.
