Five year old Rhys Kendell up early two weeks ago to report joyfully sighting the first robin of the season. I wonder how he spent those stormy days. Nancy Bryans along with the Fairey's and the Hancs of Bowmanville helped their Mom and Dad - Babe and Wilf Brown of Courtice move to their new home in McLaughlin Square recently. Many laughs were enjoyed, most of all the typographical error of '""Nancy's twin sister Virgy Fairey' a couple of weeks ago in this col- umn as Nancy is almost two years "older." The Bryans family gathered at the home of Rick and Patti Alpe on Sunday to help Bob celebrate his birthday. Birthday greetings, Bob. Mr. and Mrs. Harry McLaughlin, Nestleton were Monday dinner guests of Mrs. Marion Hodge to help Tommy celebrate his birt day. On Sunday Marion and Tommy travelled to Cobourg where they "spent the day with John and Linda Hodge and family also celebrating Tommy's birthday. Hap- py birthday, Tommy. Moira Fallis is looking very fit these days'and why not? She has return- ed from a Square Danc- ing Trip to Hawaii. Must have taken a lot of pro- menading to get that far from home. Last weekend seven- teen Cubs and four leaders spent a very wet camping time at Camp Samac. In spite of very unfavourable weather conditions, the boys en- joyed toboganninpg, cross country skiing and a volley ball tournament at Durham College. On Saturday evening Dave Ellis entertained the boys with his guitar while on Sunday they tried their fitness tests. On Thursday, Bob Bryans retired from General Motors after 321, years' service. Gord, Deb, Leanna and Patti were supper guests. Congratulations, Bob and best wishes for a very happy retirement. Can't imagine you are ready for the rocking chair yet, Bob! The Family Talent Night at the Blackstock United Church Saturday night was 3 success with many hidden talents be- ing exhibited. A good time was enjoyed by all. Nancy and Bob Bryans along with several other couples spent the weekend at Niagara Falls pretending they were in the far South. Daniel Dunk celebrated his first birth- day last Saturday with a family gathering at the home of his grand- parents, Mr.and Mrs. Bill Mantel of Burketon. Those attending in addi- tion to his parents, John and Betty Dunk were Mr. and Mrs. Howard Ab- bott, Oshawa; Sheryl Ab- bott, Scugog Island; Michael Mantel and little Christopher VanDam, Burketon. . Public speaking is very much part of the scene these days. The following students represented their classrooms in the C.C.P.S. Public Speaking Contests - Michelle Mor- ton, Andrew Frew, Christie Corden, Arthur Schryburt, Leslie MacKenzie, Tanya Map- pin, Susan Kyte, Jody Logan, Melissa Haines, John Paul McLean, Sharri Masterson, Joel Schryburt, Jennifer Flet- cher, Tyler McKee, Erica Hiemstra, Kevin Gibson, Cindy Leach, Kris Bayley, and Esther Kelly. Top speakers in the Juniors were Leslie, John Paul and Michelle while Jennifer, Esther and Tyler took the top three places at the In- termediate contest. The Blackstock Lions held their second annual Public Speaking Contest at the Recreational Cen- tre on Wednesday, Feb. 27. Judges were Roy Turner, Blair Martyn and Rob Mairs. the con- testants were Esther Kelly, Erica Hiemstra, Kris Bayley, Melissa Haines, John Paul MacLean, Joel Schryburt and Chris Chorostecki. The winner Chris Chorostecki goes on to Mount Albert on Thursday, March 7. He will be accompanied by second place winner John Paul McLean. The Lions would like to thank the other speakers for their hard work and also Principal John Hinch for his support. On Sunday the Legion Public Speaking Contest was held in Port Perry. Local contestants were Michelle Morton, Leslie MacKenzie, Jennifer Fletcher, Esther Kelly and Bryan Beatty. Leslie won third place in the Grade 4, 5 and 6 section. Esther won third in the Grades 7 and 8 section while Bryan won first in the Grade 9 and 10 sec- tion. Congratulations to all the fine speakers who participated in all of these contests. Cartwright Central Public School was well represented at the an- nual Sunderland Music Festival the week of Feb. 18-22. The following in- strumental students par- ticpated in this festival: Grade 7 Flute Class - Shelly Frayer, Karen Doyle. Grade 8 Flute Class - Cindy Leach. Thursday, February 28 the first place winners returned to Sunderland to play in the Festival of Stars and to receive their trophies. Those atten- ding were Shelly Frayer, Lisa Duchemin, Aaron Lishman and Jennifer Fletcher. Many piano students also par- ticipated including three in the special class for students under 12 with less than 2 years ex- perience - Joanne Boyce - 1st; Julie Corden - 2nd; and Andy Mackie. Dana Russell was in the Older 'Beginners Class 10 years and under. Dan and Louise Swain and Jim and Susan Swain enjoyed a week's holiday in Barbados. The Blackstock U.C.W. General Meeting was held in the C.E. Room on the afternoon of Feb. 27 with 21 ladies present. After dessert, president Marion Larmer gave the ladies a warm welcome by reading a poem "Friendship." Worship service was conducted by Ruby VanCamp - "reading from Psalm 96 followed by a story "Faith is the best Medicine". A hymn was sung-' 'We Shall Over- come." " Grace Hall presented the program - "The Presbyterian Church .in the Republic of Korea" and compared its work with the purpose of our church. We discussed "Amnes- ty International" and voted a donation. Among the announcements was a reminder of the Oshawa Presbyterial to be held March 19 ir Kingsview United Church. On Wednesday Mrs. Belle Werry, Neil and Eleanor Werry attended the funeral of Belles niece and Neil's cousin Mrs. Bessie Ackison in Peterborough. Neil was one of the pallbearers. On Thursday Lions Ken Lee and Mike Dear- born took the two speakers from Blackstock to the Zone Finals in Sharon. Chris Chorostecki placed se- cond in the Boy's Section and will proceed to the District Competition in Stouffville on April 2. Good luck Chris. It's that time again.
