He knocked the On- tario Conservatives on a wide range of issues, in- cluding the lack of action on acid rain, the tax on essential products, the demise of the small, family farm, the lack of protection for workers in such areas as pensions, minimum wages and job security, and the hypocrisy of preaching restraint while hiking government advertising by 17 per cent and the size of the provincial Cabinet which has 32 members, 11 of whom are without portfolio. Throughout his hour- long address, Mr. Rae returned several times to his main points that a lot of people in Ontario are simply not getting a fair shake when it comes to job security, pensions, day care and equal op- portunity for women in the workplace. "This election cam- paign is going to be about fairness," he stated. He rapped the government for handing out fat pen- sions to senior bureaucrats who retire early while many part- time workers in Ontario have no benefits at all. MM tu-- Wilbur to run NDP He talked about the plight of small farmers faced with low prices for their products and the difficulty young farmers have getting established. "The only people who can get into agriculture these days are those who have chosen their parents very wisely," he said. He added that contrary to the beliefs of some people, the NDP "believes so strongly in the rights of private pro- perty, we think everyone should have some, not just the banks and trust companies.' Noting that Premier Miller appears to be spending a lot of time travelling across the pro- vince, Mr. Rae predicted a spring election and said his party is ready for the campaign. The NDP is the first party in the Durham York riding to select a candidate. Ross Stevenson, who easily won the riding for the Conservatives in 1981, is expected to win the nomination again, and well known Brock Township councillor and farmer Don Hadden has announced his intention to seek the Liberal nomination. Durham York, with about 50,000 eligible voters is a far flung riding stretching from Cartwright in the east to the Keswick-Sutton- Holland Landing area in the west, taking in all of Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock Townships. Mrs. Wilbur, 46, has lived in Scugog Township for the past 15 years or so. She was educated in Toronto and London, England, and was a teacher for several years. She and her hus- band, Jim, an Oshawa lawyer, have three children. [= -- OWNERSHIP? HOUSING? BORELIA CO-OP, NAME: PHONE NO.: ARE YOU HAVING TROUBLE FINDING A PLACE TO LIVE IN PORT PERRY?
