10 --~ PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 26, 1985 CIVP helps individuals deal with high duress The Community In- volvement and Volunteer Program of Scugog and Uxbridge recognizes that stress is a prominant part of our society. To- day's individual has the constant challenge of coping with high levels of emotional duress. The C.I.V.P. (Com- munity Involvement and Volunteer Program) of Scugog and Uxbridge was developed, under the auspices of Community Care, in 1978 to provide assistance to alleviate stress for ex-psychiatric patients and people ex- periencing the strains of daily life who have never been institutionalized and wish to remain in their community and out of psychiatric hospital. Crucial to the opera- tionof the C.1.V.P. is the service of the volunteers who help meet demands of those individuals in the community who require LERIENEGIOF THE LIBRARY aga SPRING MEETING a MOLAPRI Lo INTHE LIBRARY v -WELCOME Sprays r™ BRANDON FORD MERCURY SALES LTD. The volunteers' primary focus is on help- ing clients with specific tasks which could range from the maintenance of personal hygiene to get- ting involved in com- munity activities or social functions. The C.I.V.P. Co- ordinator, Nel Marshall, points out that the volunteer, while vital to the functioning of the C.1.V.P. is not a replace- ment for a professional counsellor. "They are there to provide guidance to: reinforce and compliment the sup- port and assistances given by doctors and other social service professionals." Ms. Marshall stresses that volunteers must be patient individuals with a healthy attitude towards mental health so that they can be supportive to -clients. These persons may be referred to the program by doctors, family counsellors, public health nurses, vocational rehabilitation centres, welfare workers, family members or the in- dividuals themselves. The program is funded 100 per cent by the Ministry of - Health.
