It was a solid period of play for Port Perry as much of the action was in the Bradford zone. The middle frame was less than four minutes old when Mark Barkey clicked for his second of the night and it looked like the game might turn into a rout. Barkey snared a loose puck in the Bradford end and snapped a wrist shot from the short side that caught the top corner behind diminutive goaltender Jason Beintema. But the Bradford squad mounted something of a com- eback as the period mov- ed along, starting at the 7:04 mark when captain Steve Varga scored on a penalty shot. The shot was awarded after Port Perry defenseman Brad Traves was forced to haul Varga down from behind on a clear breakaway. Varga scooped up an errant Port Perry pass deep in his own zone and had a free ticket right to Stacey Ballingall's doorstep. On the penalty 'shot, the Bradford captain beat Ballingall cleanly with a perfect low shot to the corner. The visitors cut the Port Perry lead to two goals at the 9:12 mark when Pat Wulfers fired a screened shot from the blue line with Varga Bantams advance to the all-Ontario finals drawing an assist on the play. The two goals seemed to give the visitors a new lease on life and they began to get some shots on Ballingall in the Port Perry net. But the Ban- tams shut Bradford down in the final period with some strong work in the corners and along the boards. Ballingall didn't have an especially busy night in the Port Perry cage. But he made his biggest and most important save of the game at the 39 se- cond mark of period one as Bradford's Neil Wingeat caught the Port defense flat-footed at the blue line and he sailed in for a clear breakaway. Ballingall stabbed the close in shot with his glove hand and held on. Had Wingeat scored on that one, it might have put an entirely different complexion on the game. The game was cleanly played with just 14 minor penalties called, six to the home team. But there were plenty of solid body checks thrown with Greg Stapleton and Phil McBride using the hits effectively. Captain Shawn Nanay, the team's resident bag- gage smasher, played his usual robust game forcing the opponents to keep their heads up at all times. Late in the third, Nanay was the victim of a hard check that sent him sprawling heavily into the boards. But he bounced up quickly with no ill effects. While the Bantams were full marks for the series victory, the three games with Bradford lacked the buzzer-to- buzzer intensity of the five game series 'with Ernestown. Tweens lose? On Sunday, March 17, the Port Perry Chris Allen Aluminum Tweens travelled to Woodville and lost their first league game of the year. Port came out slow, and never really got going, losing by a score of 3-1. Hazel Beare scored our only goal, assisted by Jackie Durham. Thursday night they travelled to Oshawa for an exhibition game against their 'B' team Again we had a slow game, but managed a tie. Scoring for Port was Lisa Levy, Melissa Moehring, Connie Norton and Jenny Blanchard, while Heather Lawren¢e and Jackie Durham each got 1 assist. Saturday night proved better, as we beat Sunderland by a score of 5-3. Kelly Calloway scored 2 goals, 1 assist; Connie Norton, 1 goal, 1 assist; Hazel Beare and Lisa Levy each with 2 assists We only have one more game this year, and that is next Sunday, so come out and support Port Perry Ringette.
