pe---- Gen lw SR Many pigs make terri- ble mothers--so poor, in fact, that piglet death during the fir:t week of life is a significant economic loss to swine- raising operations. Often the sow suffers from in- sufficient milk produc- tion, caused by low milk -supply or an exceptional- ly large litter. Sometimes, the mother's disposition seems unstable, ranging from mere nervousness, to refusal to nurse, to outright killing of the baby pigs. Now, an agricultural researcher from the University of Guelph may have solved the problem. Dr. J. Frank Hurnik, a specialist in animal psychology, has developed an artificial sow. Although many researchers have at- tempted to perfect such a device before, they have had only limited success. Their machines have not been widely accepted, either by swine pro- ducers or, more impor- tant, by themselves. Dr. Hurnik feels he has succeeded where others have failed piglets because his machine has been designed with the instinctual need of young piglets in mind. Piglets are sociable feeders. They like to nose the nipples before they nurse, massage the sur- rounding areas with their tiny trotters before they settle down to feed, and exchange a series of meaningful grunts and other vocalizations with their mothers. General- ly, they like to play and cavort with their littermates. Dr. Hurnik's device allows the piglets to in- dulge their instinctual behaviour. Previous ar- tificial sow designs did not have sufficiently flex- ible nipples or bodies, or did not converse with the little porkers. . Dr. Hurnik's artificial sow has three primary parts: a refrigerated "container to store the milk, a thermal bath to warm the milk to 37 degrees C. prior to release to the piglets, and a separate artifical udder, with an array of teats, for each pen. Box 837 Leave Message PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 2, 1985 -- 37 | Piglets love mechanical mom to ten piglets in each. The key to the unit's operation is a complex timer, which also con- trols two heat lamps suspended over the nur- - sing and resting areas of the pen. When it is time for the babies to be fed, "the heat lamp under which they are resting switches off and the one over the artificial sow goes on. Nursing calls and grunts are then broad- cast from inside the ar- tificial udder. This seems to be an extremely strong cue to the piglets. Indeed, when earlier pro- totypes had the speakers outside the udder, the piglets were more at- tracted to the speakers than to the milk! One minute after the grunts, the warm milk is dispensed by gravity to the udder. Dr. Hurnik says the time and inten- sity of the nursing that follows is in- distinguishable from the real situation. Two minutes after milk release, the nursing-area heat lamp switches off and the rest-area lamp goes on again. The sated little porkers toddle back to the warmth to play, and soon fall asleep in a heap again. Dr. Hurnik feels his device has many advan- tages for the pigs, not least the "ethically as well as economically more acceptable alter- native to abrupt early weaning." Sudden early weaning is not usually - well-tolerated by the sen- sitive piglets. CE aaa a--a--a--a--a--a EMMANUEL FULL GOSPEL FELLOWSHIP Durham Rd. 23 and 7th Conc. Rev. G.B.
