The approval came at the regular meeting of council Monday after- noon, and sets out various conditions that must be met by the developer, including a freeze on four lots that may be subject to the Agriculture Code of Practice. The development pro- posal, known as Ambleside, was first presented to council before Christmas, and met with strong opposi- tion« from - existing residents living along the lake side of the road. Council's decision Monday afternoon to ap- prove in principle the 20 lots was opposed by area councillor John Wolters, who felt the municipality should give some direc- tion to setting up a com- munal water system which could serve homes on both sides of the beach road. However, acting Mayor Lawrence Malcolm pointed out that water systems are a regional responsibility and it will be up to Durham Region to say - whether a communal system or individual wells are required. The four frozen lots are 'numbers 9 to 12 on the original proposal, and council is also seeking a 1 foot reserve along the front of drainage areas. The agreement in princi- ple calls for street lighting to local stan- dards and road paving to municipality standards. The next step in the ap- proval process will be up to the Regional Planning department and Durham council. If formal objections from residents already living on Gerrow's Beach are made, these will like- ly come at the zoning change stage. At public hearings into the pro- posal last fall, some residents who live along the beach road indicated they may be prepared to force a hearing in front of the Ontario Municipal Roard. ae Le esse I Ee Ice takes hike one day early The ice on Lake Scugog disappeared one day earlier this year than in 1984, with the official date for 1985 being Saturday, April 13. Although the ice had been gone from the west side of the lake almost a week earlier, it would not give up its icy grip along Port Perry's ) lakefront until Saturday. It was just two years ago that the ice left Lake Scugog more than a month earlier than this year setting a new record. In 1983 it left on March 11, becoming the earliest the ice has ever left the lake. The latest record on date was recorded in 1965 when the ice held on until April 29 before yielding to the Spring sun and rain.
