There, on board the showboat, the locals were promised they would see a show like they've never seen before and, in fact, "they'll want to come back for more." Likewise, audiences who had the opportunity to see the Scugog Choral Society's production of 'Showboat' during the past week will surely agree with Captain Andy that this was a show the likes of which has never been seen before. A trip on board the Choral Society showboat did make one want to come "aboard for more." 'Showboat,' written by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein 2nd, is set in the post-Civil War Southern United States. Directed by David Sims, the production carefully created the mood and pace of Southern life. Set in a world in which strict roles and rules separated blacks and whites, the musical revolves around the life aboard the showboat, the Cotton Blossom. V'hen both the leading lady and leading man aboard the showboat are forced to leave, Captain Andy, convincingly played by Hugh Baird, decides to use his daughter, Magnolia, as leading lady, much to the dismay of Andy's cantankerous wife, Parthy Anne. A handsome river gambler, Gaylord Ravenal, is also at- tracted to the showboat and is pressed into the role of leading man. Magnolia and Gaylord, under the guise of the Cotton Blossom's show, profess their love for each other. Their marriage is a happy one, but years later, Gaylord, down on his luck as a gambler, abandons his wife and daughter, Kim. En- couraged by friends and family, Magnolia strikes out on her own to become a successful singer. Finally, twenty years alter, Captain Andy is able to reunite the couple where they discover that true love still remains. Catherine Millar car- ries the role of Magnolia admirably and indeed, creates magic moments when she sings. When protraying Magnolia"s poor acting ability on board the showboat, Catherine truly shines. Vic Agnew portrays _ the male lead of Gaylord Ravenal with an aura of Clark Gable. He never overshadows other characters, yet Agnew dominates the stage with his subtle aloofness. His melodic tenor com- pliments Catherine's soprano to produce warm and tender moments during their love songs. Yet, the most tender moment of the production is created when Ravenal says good- bye to his daughter. The sincerity of Agnew pulls at the heart strings. New members in the Choral Society added strength to the produc- tion. Daine Lackie, pro- traying the young chorus girl, Ellie, provided the perfect foil for the com- ic character, Frank, pro- trayed by newcomer Rob Corbett. A clever dance routine and a scene in which Corbett lands on the stage several times (Turn to page 6) scene in which Magnolia has just revealed she has fallen in love with a man. Queenie, played by Jean Kennedy (left), Magnolia played by Catherine Millar (cen- tre) and Julie played by Alice Lee during a Handsome young riverboat gambler, Gaylor Ravenal (right) accepts the challenge to become an actor by Capt. Andy. The characters in this scene are, from left, Parthy Anne Hawkes (Rober- ta Baird), Capt. Andy (Hugh Baird), Frank (Robert Corbett and Gaylord Ravenal (Vic Agnew).
