he Ont. road deaths decline last year Motor vehicle fatalities declined on Ontario roads in 1984 for the lowest total recorded since 1958, Ontario Minister of Transporta- tion and Communica- tions George McCague said recently. "Last year, 1,118 peo- ple were killed in ac- cidents, a 7.1 per cent decrease over the 1,204 reported in 1983," he commented. 'Unfortunately, this decrease in the number of motor vehicle fatalities was accom- panied by an increase in editorial comments (From page 5) And when the American public put pressure on their elected officials, things usually start to happen. Ironically, the best thing that could happen right now would be for the car makers to outright refuse to honour any paint warranty for damage caused by acid rain. That may be tough on the consumer, but if millions of new car owners suddenly get angry over the acid rain issue as it hits them directly in the pocket book, politicians on both sides of the border are going to feel a lot of heat. And that heat just might be the thing to get these politicians off their back-sides to take ac-: tion against acid rain, rather than just talking about it. Exhaust fumes from cars and trucks is a con- tributor to the nitrous oxide component of acid rain, but the main source are the coal-fired power and manufacturing plants. Acid rain is a major environmental problem. It kills certain lakes and there is growing evidence to suggest it is now killing our forests, especially the sugar maple trees. Action, not talk is needed now. Maybe as car owners watch their new pride and joy turn into rust buckets before their eyes, this will be the spark to force the needed clean-up of this critical problem. ® BAR+B-Q [Taste the delicious difference of with your choice of tasty sauces! ® HONEY ® SWEET & SOUR ® HOT MUSTARD ® TARTAR SAUCE FRIED CHICKEN & SEAFOOD Thank You for q 20 Great Years! Last year, 140 motor- cyclists were fatally in- jured, up from 117 in 1983. This represents a 20 per cent increase and an 11 per cent increase over the previous worst total of 126 recorded in 1982. Factors involved in motorcycle fatalities re- mained constant: failure to wear helmets, alcohol impairment and ex- cessive speed. "I am intent on developing new strategies to curb the current motorcycle fatality trend," McCague said. 'While there was asignificant improve- ment in the number of motorcycle fatalities in 1983, this proved to be on- ly a short-lived trend. '"'Drinking-driving campaigns and increas- ed use of seat belts have proven effective means of making Ontario roads safer. So, our aim is to main- tain a long-term trend of decreasing the number of motor vehicle accident fatilities on an annual basis," he concluded.
