20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed. May 22, 1985 rts A Fo bud yo ag -~ A few of the boys from Port Perry High School and Lindsay Collegiate put their heads together last week and the result was a game of rugger, played at PPHS. The sport, which is growing in popularity, bears a very slight resemblance to football, but the players wear no single point. McKee proves sports mettle Port Perry's High School's Vaughan McKee proved himself to be one of the most outstanding athletes in Durham Region last weekend as he set a new record in the senior boys shot put as well as winn- ing the discus in the LOSSA Track and Field meet held in Oshawa. Vaughan has been an outstanding athlete throughout his high school career. He has won the discus and shot put events at both LOSSA and COSSA meets since 1982 and placing among the best in the province at the All Ontario meets. His domination of these events has been un- precedented in Durham. Vaughan, along with other P.P.H.S. athletes now moves on to the COSSA meet to be held this Thursday at Napanee. Vaughan shared the spotlight at the Oshawa Civic Stadium with Leon Presner also of Port Perry High School's track team who won the 100 and 200 metre sprints ~ in the Junior category. Other P.P.HS. athletes 'who achieved notable accomp- lishments, were Drew Stark with seconds in the 100 m. hurdles and in the 400 m. hurdles, both in the junior category. Cindy Summers plac- ed fourth in the Junior Girls high jump. Only two other girls managed padding. The melee pictured above is a scrum and the ; I idea is to somehow get possession of the ball and move ol this higny up-field. The outcome of this game wasn't decided until Gajlant with a sixth the final seconds when Lindsay scored to win it by a place in the long jump and Dianne Fallaise with a sixth in the shot put. both of these were junior events. In the midget boys category, Adam Zim- merman earned a fifth place in the 100 m sprint, a third in the 200 m and a fourth in the long jump. Mike Bosley gained a third in the 100 m sprint and a sixth in the shot put. Jeff Oke a sixth in the 800 m, Dave Watts a fourth in the 200 m and Tom Crosier a sixth in the discus. Also, the midget boys relay team earned a creditable fourth place. In the Junior Boys, Drew Stark and Leon Presner's accomp- lishments were added to Fergus Bell with a third in the 3000 metres and a fifth in the 1500 m; and Mike Luchka with a se- cond in the triple jump. Fred Cockerton earned a fourth in the senior boys triple jump to add to Vaughan McKee's victories. These athletes now move on to the LOSSA meet. Port Perry's track and field coaches, Paul Arculus, Gerry Cole and Cathy Element are all pleased with the ac- complishments of their team. '"'Vaughan's record breaking throw gave us all a renewed sense of pride. The whole school shared in the joy of his win," said coach Arculus. Vaughan's throw broke one of the longest standing records in LOSSA history. The previous record was set by O'Neill Collegiate's Walter Aru in 1958! EWING POOLS...
