With wide knowledge of farming Stevenson claims agricultural post Durham York MPP Ross Stevenson has been named to the Ontario Cabinet as Minister of Agriculture and Food. Mr. Stevenson began his new duties on Friday after a swearing in ceremony at Queens Park. This is his first Cabinet position. First elected to the Legislature for this riding in 1981, he had lit- tle trouble retaining this seat in the general elec- tion earlier this month. Mr. Stevenson's name has often been mention- ed for a Cabinet appoint- ment, especially the agriculture portfolio, as he has a wide knowledge of both the practical and formal aspects of this important industry. He holds bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Guelph and a Ph D in agriculture from Iowa State Univer- sity. He was a professor at Guelph University for several years before returning home to run the family hog and cash crop farm north of Uxbridge. During Mr. Steven- son's first four years in Legislature, he was parliamentary assistant to the minister of the en- vironment and assistant to Larry Grossman when he was provincial treasurer, and he was a strong supporter of Grossman in his bid to win the leadership of the Conservative Party. Judgement has been reserved until June 20 in the trial of a former Port Perry video store owner charged with distrib- uting obscene material. James Hoffman, 28, will appear before Judge William Lane in a Whit- by courtroom to hear a verdict in the case, which has been ongoing since Durham Region Police seized video tapes from Village Video December 20, 1983. Crown attorney Sue McLean screened a series of clippings from most of the video tapes in her summation to the judge on May 16. Although Judge Lane had seen the tapes before, it was the first time clippings were shown to the entire court audience. Most of the clips show- ed examples of combina- tions of sex and violence, or degradation of women. In one clip from a movie called Sex Boat, a group of "pirates" over- take a cruise ship of female passengers and proceed to rape each woman. "All of them are sup posedly rapes which the women are enjoying." It will be Judge Lane's considerable task to decide if one, all of any of the tapds are obscene, not according to is own personal ppinidn, but as he put it{ 'It's what the community will tolerate." Defence lawyer Paul Greenway has tried to prove the tapes in ques- tion are no more obscene than others shown in public movie houses, ap- proved by the Ontario Censor Board. He has submitted movies like Clockwork Orange, Death Wish and Death Wish II, all of which have themes of rape followed by revenge, the recurring theme of one of the tapes Mr. Hoffman was charg- ed with, called 1 Spit On Your Grave. The charges were laid after Durham Police received a complaint from a private citizen. Two police officers went to the store and rented three tapes.
