20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 4, 1985 rm ports Legion squad off to a quick start The Port Perry Legion Br. 419, Fastball Club is off to such a fast start in this season's softball ac- tion, there hasn't been enough time to write about it. The season started May 12th at home hosting last year's OASA Sr. 'A' Ontario Champs from Oshawa in a pre- season double header won by the visiting team 4-0 and 6-1. This gave all our players some strong competition during Greenbank still the nemesis in tournament play spring try-outs to deter- mine wh would make the squad. The league schedule opened in Oshawa with Port beating the New Oshawa City and District "Intermediate 'A' entry featuring pitcher Randy Underwood 3-0. Port Perry followed this with a 6-3 victory in their home opener over the Oshawa Juniors. The high-light of this game was Port's Larry Pickey hitting a game-winning bases loaded homer. On the May holiday weekend the Legion squad travelled to Brooklin for their annual tournament and came away with a second place finish. Port Perry open- ed the tournament with their usual loss to Green- bank 2-1. (This has now stretched to five games over three years!) Port then rebounded with vic- tories over Brooklin 10-0, Oshawa Curly"s 2-1, Oshawa ACL 7-5 and Whitby Legion 5-2. In the championship game the Legion team led 2-0 until Oshawa's last bat, where they promptly scored 3 runs to take the championship. Back in league play Port defeated Oshawa Copperfields featuring Randy again, and smashed them all over the park 6-3 with fifteen hits off their great pitcher. 'Port Legion then hit the highway again the following weekend for a tournament in South Mountain outside Ot- tawa. In a generally lacklustre performance, Port defeated Smith Falls 6-5, before losing to Berwick 2-1 and being Underwood knocked out of the tour- nament. The Oshawa Junior manangement were good enough to lend us their pitching staff of Mark Goreski and Brad Baker which was great- ly appreciated, as some of our players couldn't make the trip. An addi- tional treat was having former Port Perry Hockey Star Donny Young play for Port all weekend which brought back fond memories from yesteryear. Returning to league action again last week, Port players to an uninspired 6-1 loss against Whitby Legion with new found pitcher Wayne Wells from Peter- borough pitching for the visitors. Future games for Port consist of Wednesday night 8:30 p.m. at home against Pickering and Thursday night in Oshawa at Durham Fields against the Juniors. On the weekend the Branch 419 boys will be in Toronto for a tourna- ment at Ken Gardens in the Beaches Area. This years league play features the Senior 'A' Oshawa Blues in an ab- breviated league schedule, with teams from Cold Springs (Sr. 'B'), Oshawa Copper- fields (Int.'A'), Whitby Legion (Int. 'A'), Oshawa McC (Jr. 'A') and ourselves (Int. 'C'). New players added to this years edition of the Port Perry Legion Club are Claremont's Larry Pilkey, Utica's Wilbur Boys - Todd and Scott, Raglan's Jack Bright, and local hometown favourite 'Big' Bill Owen. Returning from last year's team are MVP Robert Evans; pit- cher Lawrie Williams; John Annis and Tim Thompson; Fielders Col- in Wackett, Grant Jackson, Bill St. John, Bill Bridge, Rick Evans, Jay Williams and last but not least David Dickson.
