Seagrave and Area News by Marilyn Beacock Canadians, on the whole, are a very strong determined and resilient group of people. That strength, determination, resilience and a faith in a better tomorrow was not created by accident but was the result of overcoming various adversities in life and working hard to change something tragic or destructive into something productive once again. This trait may have begun with our forefathers but I'm sure they would be happy to know that it still strong- ly prevailed today. One only has to observe the folks in the Barrie - Grand Valley - Tot- tenham areas to prove that point. These in- dustrious folks are already beginning to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives and homes and to begin the arduous task of rebuilding following the devastation caused by the killer tornado that ripped and roared through their com- munities late in the after- noon of May 1st leaving in its wake a trail of death and destruction the likes of which central On- tario has not seen since October 1954 when Hur- ricane Hazel struck. I'm sure that these folks must be quite over- whelmed by the tremen- BD) DURHAM PUBLIC dous financial generosity extended to them by so many kind-hearted peo- ple not to mention the mountainous collection of food and clothing that also was sent to aid them. It does one's heart good and certainly main- tains one's faith in humanity to see this out- pouring of assistance to others less fortunate than we. The community of Seagrave takes great pleasure in offering our congratulations to Miss Joanne Nobbs who recently graduated from the Registered Nursing Assistants program at the Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay. With Joanne's friendly smile and sunny disposition she'd be an encourage- ment for any hospital- bound patient! Best wishes Joanne as you embark on your new career. She presently is employed at the Daheim Nursing Home in Uxbridge. Last Saturday evening many close friends and relatives gathered at the Wanamaker home to honour a very well- known community figure Mrs. Gertie Wanamaker on the occasion of a very special birthday - because she is still a young looking lady I will decline from mentioning THE REGIONAL MUNICIPALITY OF DURHAM NOTICE Take notice that the Regional Municipality of Durham is considering AN APPLICATION TO AMEND THE DURHAM REGIONAL OFFICIAL PLAN The amendment, as submitted by the applicant, pro- poses to permit an additional non-farm residential dwelling within the site indicated on the map below. Follow- ing a delightful dinner with her family they returned to Gertie's home where she was sur- prised to find a houseful of guests waiting to share this very memorable day with her. I might also add that Gertie shared part of her limelight with a very special little per- son, her great grandson Mst. Jason Wanamaker who is slightly over a month old and certainly received rave reviews from an admiring crowd. Our Good Neighbour Gals have recently pur- chased the video Strong Kids, Safe Kids and it is available to any in- dividuals or groups who are interested in helping to street-proof their children. The film can be picked up at Maxine Lavereau's or by calling her at 985-3616. The film 5 Year Annual Interest is highly recommended and is quite appealing to kids as well as being very informative. A must for every family! The Bd. of Stewards will once again be con- ducting their annual ap- peal for funds to enable our little church to meet its financial obligations. Traditionally this can- vass has been held dur- ing the fall but as the church attendance drops dramatically during the summer months the bills infortunately do not take a holiday and this com- bination places con- siderable strain on the treasury so it was decid- ed to hold the canvass during a period of the year when the need was the greatest. Please welcome your represen- tative when he or she calls and give generous- ly. Many thanks to Mr. Darrell for taking the service on Sunday. There seems to be some confu- sion regarding the places of worship over the next few weeks. To date and to the best of my knowledge until this pro- blem is ironed out, ser- vices at Pinedale and Seagrave will be cancell- ed for this coming Sun- day only due to a joint service being held at the Greenbank United Church where Rev. Ar- thur Rodgers will be delivering his farewell message to the three con- gregations. I believe the service begins at 11:00 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. Ladies please bring lunch. On June 30 Rev. Rodgers will be preaching his last ser- vice to the Seagrave con- gregation. Service will be held at the usual time of 10:00 a.m. Beginning July 1 our new minister the Rev. David Sheperd will begin assuming his duties as minister to the pastoral charge of Greenbank, Pinedale and Seagrave. More details on that at a later date. On Thursday, June 20 beginning sometime bet- ween 7:30 and 8:00 p.m., the community will honour Rev. and Mrs. Rodgers at a Farewell Party which will be held in the Seagrave United Church. Ladies are re- quested to bring along some sandwiches or cookies. It is with regret that we are losing one of our neighbours at the end of the month. Liz and Greg Smith and family have resided in the village for the past 10 years and have contributed greatly to our community during that time and we would like them to know that their contributions were greatly appreciated. We are certainly going to miss Liz as she was one of the correspondents for this column. The Smith's have purchased a lovely home on Simcoe St. in Prince Albert and 1 would like to take this op- portunity to say a big ""thank-you" and to wish all of you happiness in your new community. Prince Albert has some great people - I ought to know - I married one of them! Seagrave now has two more teenagers in the rank and file! Our very best wishes to you on this special occasion! It gives us cor- respondents a boost when people from other cities and towns tell us how much they enjoy reading our column. I'd like to say "hi - and thanks for reading this lengthy epistle" to one of our fans - Bob Paton of View Lake!! Sunday night the mens Country Lane ball team whipped the Sid Landry team at the Seagrave Park by a huge margin. Hang in there guys - you're lookin' good! Sunday afternoon Al Wray and "company" hosted our annual Sun- day School picnic at the park. After filling little tummies with lots of barbecued hot dogs and hamburgers, they had time to burn off the calories by running races and doing all the fun things kids do at social functions like that. Thanks Al and Heather and Bill B. for supplying the prizes. We had a great time! Don, I and Craig at- tended the 58th Beacock Family Reunion on Saturday which was held at the Blackstock Recreational Centre. Plans are underway for the 60th anniversary celebration which will be held in June 1987. And will be quite a unique experience. Well folks my finger is getting cramped and my pen's running out of ink so I guess it's a hint to sign off. Have a nice summer kids and play safe! We need you and we love you all.
