10 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 25, 1985 Thanks to a group of parents who went way beyond the call of duty, the kids at Epsom Public School now have some pretty terrific playground equipment. Up until two years ago, the only equipment the tiny school had was a set of monkey bars, which was alright, except, as parent Cathy Anderson points out, "'a lot of kids fell off them So it was about two years ago that Mrs. Anderson seriously began planning a strategy to have new equipment built at the McNab stars on Lindsay stage Port Perry resident Alison McNab will star in Kawartha Summer Theatre's first play of the season - 'There Goes the Bride' by Ray Cooney and John Chapman. Alison will be remembered for her per- formance in 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?' and 'Prisoner of Residents at the scene of a three-car collision at the corner of Bigelow and Paxton Streets on Thursday, June 20th were saying stop signs would have prevented the 'accident. Ironically, Scugog Council approved a motion school. "1 thought they needed something more to play with," she said. 'And when | mentioned my idea, I got a really, real- ly good response." She organized meetings, did research and basically got the fun- draising show on the road. The committee that was formed was made up of parent volunteers who discovered a profes- sional set of playground equipment would cost somewhere in the neighbourhood of $6,000 But with a little Second Avenue' with Port Perry's Premier Performance Theatre Co. And two years after the equipment was an idea, it was all in place, last month. "We couldn't have done it without the parents," said Mrs Anderson. 'They're great people." Council gives nod to Paxton St. signs It took a tie-breaking vote by Mayor Jerry Taylor to do it, but Scugog Council finally approved a stop sign for the corner of Bigelow and Paxton Streets. --- A motion.to approve the sign divided coun- cillors in half last Mon- day June 17th, necessitating the Mayor's voting input. "I feel with the flow of traffic and the location, that if a stop sign would alleviate the problem and make the residents feel more secure, then it should be installed," he told the Star. Residents near the in- tersection have been calling for the stop sign for some time, after citing several accidents and many close calls. Bigelow Street is a thoroughfare, while Pax- ton Street is controlled by yield signs. Area homeowners have been saying the yield signs aren't enough and have been deman- ding stop signs instead. Ironically, three days after the .sign was ap- proved, there was a three-car accident at the intersection. Luckily, no one was hurt. Before the new signs can be installed, council will have to change a by- law, which means the sign won't be in place for about another month.
