Paddlers set sights on provincials Mike Freeman and Bill Hurst have set a goal for themselves this summer. They are hoping to qualify for the national Marathon Canoe Racing championship to be held August 17 and 18 in Peterborough. But to get there, the two Scugog Township residents first must pro- ve they are among the top marathon canoe racers in Ontario by qualifying at the provin- cial finals, also in Peter- borough July 6 and 7. Freeman and Hurst have been training hard to make this goal, paddl- ing two or three hours each evening on Lake Scugog, and their efforts have paid off already this summer with victories in the first two races they have entered. They won the 20 mile Canoe the Nonquon on L.ake Scugog early in June and two weeks ago, they took another first in Canoe Racing Associa- tion event on the Not- tawasaga River near Angus. In the senior mens .class over 14 miles with three portages, the pair finished with a time of one hour, 53 minutes, 43 seconds, well ahead of the other competitors in this class. Mike told the Star they were very pleased with the time, despite the fact they lost a couple of minutes by taking a wrong turn at one of the portages. "Our goal now is to qualify for the na- tionals,"" he added. Competitors from the Scugog area came home from the Nottawasaga event with several trophies. Terri Gibson and Robert Baird paddled to a second place finish in the couples class; Dave Booth and Joe Giroux took first in the recrea- tional division, while Paula Haugen and Heather McDougall were first in the womens open. ai y a mut A a bo. if " A CEC ER A BO SE Ra QR el ce Iss PAPE okt 1 SI Lo EA Ni hi
