PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 25, 1985 -- 23 Local Mite Stars get a first taste of competition On Saturday June 22, the Taylor's Gulf Service Centre Mite All-Star soft- ball team travelled to Kingston Township for their annual Mite Tour- nament. This was the first ever competitive Tournament for all of the Port Perry players as they had only player House-league ball in previous years. These boys are all nine and ten years old. In the first game of the day the local team pick- ed one of the strongest teams in the Tournament to play and were defeated by Napanee 21-1. The Mites had some difficulties adjusting to the fast pitching of Todd Martin for Napanee, but as the game progressed, they began to hit. Chad Venning had a bunt single in the 2nd in- ning while Steven Par- rish had a hard single to centre field in the fourth inning and scored on Greg Rankin's single. Jeff Card pitched for Port Perry and added a single. In game 2 of the Tour- nament the Port Perry Club played Belleville who had earlier been beaten by Napanee by a close 5-2 score. The Mites showed that they came to play as they lost a hard _ fought "Heart-breaker" © 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Adam Johnson started on the mound for Port Perry and pitched five strong innings before being relieved by Jeff Card who also had two hits in- cluding a home run. Port Perry had a 5-4 lead go- ing into the bottom of the seventh inning, but a controversial call by the umpire allowed the Belleville team to score 2 runs to gain the win. Todd Smart had a single in the sixth inning to score Steven Desautels to give Port Perry a lead but the boys could not hold on for the win. Gavin Cochrane, Andrew Pereman and Duane Empringham had base hits in this game as the boys hit well and played a strong game in the field. In game three the Port Perry Mites played the host team Kingston Township and the local boys had their hitting shoes on as they trounc- ed the Kingston boys 18-5. Steven Desautels pitched a strong game for the win with help from Adam Johnson. Kent Jamieson had a home run and a single for the winners with Chad Garvock, Greg Rankin, Andrew Pereman and Scott Wylie each having two hits, Chad Venning, Steven Parrish, Simon Traynor, Todd Smart and Gavin Cochrane all had hits. The coaches, Jim Rankin, Wayne Venning and Bob Jamieson, and Manager, Jean Rankin, were very excited and. pleased with the way the boys came back after the one-sided loss in the first game to play so well in the last two games. All the players and parents enjoyed the Tournament and if the team continues to work hard and im- prove, they should do well in O.A.S A. playoffs in late August. Those gloves win for DACO The Dennis Anderson Chev Olds Ladies Lob Ball team chalked up another victory, this time defeating Green- bank by a score of 8 to 6. It was no easy task to beat Greenbank and it was due in large part by fine defensive play by DACO shortstop Linda Fielding and center fielder Janis St. John. As the score would in- dicate good defense was not exclusive to the DACO bench; shortstop Karen Cleverdon played an excellent game for Greenbank. Also, the on- ly home run of the game came from Greenbank's Carol Couch.
