Since 1975, Mr. Eakin's position as Opposition Critic for the Ministry of Tourism and Recreation and the former Ministry of Industry and Tourism has allowed him to follow closely, and become a spokesman for, many of the ministry's important issues. He has, for in- stance, focused on taxa- tion issues as they affect the tourism industry and on the interconnection between tourism, recrea- tion, transportation and the environment. "My role as critic for this ministry has provid- ed me with knowledge which will be an in- valuable asset as | work for Ontario's tourism in- dustry," said Mr. Eakins. *'I am pleased to assume this leadership when the Ontario tourism industry is fac- ing such a positive future." Mr. Eakins has also closely followed such recreation concerns as fish restocking and fishing licences, closer ties with municipalities in sports and fitness and ministry involvement in. privatization of provin- cial parks. "I look forward to meeting and working with the members of the Recreation Division," Mr. Eakins said. 'Their contribution to recrea- tion, sports and fitness significantly enhances the health and social well-being of Ontarians throughout the province."
