The Gamblers had won their division behind their excellent pitching staff of Ken Goreski, Russ Korbak and Roland Osske. (Russ Korbak had pitched two shutouts The Port Perry Legion Fastball Club travelled to Kew Beach in Toronto on the past weekend and came in 5th place, winn- ing two and losing two. The calibre of the tour- nament was quite high as Port faced two Senior 'B', one intermediate 'A' and one 'AA' team in the double-knockout tourney. On Saturday the Legion squad faced a powerful Scarborough Power Senior Team and came up on the short end of a 3-0 score. -Colin Wackett with a single was the only Port player to hit safely off pitcher Glen Latchford. Game two pitted Port Perry against Toronto's Int. 'A' Diamond Towing and the Port boys came away with a 7-4 victary. Winning pitcher was Lawrie Williams with relief help from all- purpose player Colin Wackett. The big hit in this game was a homerun by clean up hit- ter Dave Dickson. Coming back on Sun- day, the Br. 419r's took on the Int. 'AA' Hollinger team from Scarborough featuring the Crummy Brothers pitching tandem. Port took an early 1-0 lead in the 1st inning when lead off bat- ter Colin Wackett strok- ed a long homerun to left centre. Hollinger's came back in the 3rd with 2 runs to take a 2-1 lead in four consecutive singles against pitcher John An- nis. After this flurry by Hollingers, Annis settled down and retired the next 15 batters in a row. In Port's 5th inning, Rick and had struck out 15 batters in a Saturday night win over Newmarket). On Sunday the return of Trevor Till who had been playing with the Oshawa Juniors in the Ontario Junior Cham- pionships and centre fielder Dennis Romeril who had been absent due to work committments, made the picture look bright for the Gamblers to advance to the tourna- ment finals However, the first inn- ing proved to be their downfall as the usually reliable Greenbank defense faltered on the rain soaked infield and Richmond Hill scored 6 runs in the first inning The Gamblers fought back and at the end of Evans hit a mar. aoth 2 run shot to right field to put Port ahead 3-2 and Dave Dickson followed scoring the insurance run as Port Legion won the game 4-2. On what was to be the Legion squad's last game of the day, Port was defeated 2-1 in extra innings by a strong senior 'B' team AV Systems the Beach League. A great pitching duel between Port's Lawrie Williams and AV"s Manganaro went down to the wire in regulation time with Lawrie throwing a nifty 1 hitter and Manganaro allowing 2 hits. In the ex- tra inning a runner was placed at second base to start the inning, whereby AV Systems out-scored the Legion team 2-1. ° In Tournament play the Port Legion boys are quickly rounding into form as all of the players are getting out to the games and are playing against top calibre teams. This will help down the road come play-off time some time In August. In League play, which is another story all together, Port has struggled of late as last week's game of show Port losing to Oshawa "urlys 9-5 before bounc- ing back to beat Brooklin 5-1. Future games have the locals in Oshawa Tues- day night at 8:30 p.m. to face the Senior 'A' Oshawa Blues in a league tilt. The next night in Port they host league rivals Oshawa Copperfields led by their famous senior calibre pitching ace Randy Underwood in what will be a high spirited contest to say the least. Next weekend the Legion team travels to Ottawa to participate in a local tournament in Russel, Ontario. Hopeful- ly Port can make amends for last month's trip to the same area when they won one and lost one, going home earlier than expected. Port Perry is pleased to announce that they have signed Sutton's ace hurler Al Heintzman to an O.AS. A. certificate and he will compete for Port in the All-Ontario playdowns. This is a ma- jor addition to the team, as anybody that followed the Port team in last year's play-offs knows, as Port edged Sutton 2 games to 1 in last year's zone finals. His pitching arm and strong bat will no doubt help Port in their O.A.S.A. champion- ship pursuit. In the seventh inning Rich- mond Hill scored the winning run on a wild pitch and this time the Greenbank team could not come up with the ty- INg or winning runs. The Gamblers out-hit the Richmond Hill squad by 15 to 8 but they left too many runners stranded on the bases Ray Meisner and Don Beaton led the attack with 3 hits each in the final game with Neil Rodd. Steve Foster, Hugh Johnston and Den- nis Romeril each having a pair Greg Rodd blasted an "out of the park' home run in the second inning The hottest Gambler bat in the tournament however, belonged to Hugh Johnson who bat- ted 539 for the four games and many of his outs were long fly balls that were pulled down by opposing fielders.
