Mr. Nasmith, a noted artist and naturalist, died suddenly June 19 at the age of 69, while working on his latest project to catalogue the birds of Ontario. Mr. Nasmith's cousin has requested aneayumitv 'Bye, Eric: we'll miss you... As cousins go, you were tops. When 1 entered High School, and Barney left Port Perry to attend U. of T.. you took over as my watchdog. Luckily for me, you and Doug had no sisters of your own. Remember how you either approved Where's the scoop ? There were all sorts of interesting bargains up for grabs Satur- day afternoon as the Scugog Island Women's Institute held its an- nual auction at the Island Centre. That's Janis Richardson holding the scoop while auctioneer Don Cochrane does his best to coax one final bid from the crowd. The event raised about $800 for the In- stitute's work. we'll miss you.. or disapproved of my dates, and always let me know? Mostly my dates were friends of yours, and yours, mine. ~ Remember the night you had your mother's car, and you and Marge, and Mac and I found "ourselves in the ditch out on the 8th concession"? A friendly farmer with a horse eventually pulled us out, but it was well past the time we were all supposed to have been home. Marge was grounded indefinitely; you were severely reprimanded, and I don't remember what happen- ed to Mac. I got off light- ly with a mild scolding, because I was with my cousin! Like my brother, sister, and other cousins, you were a model stu- dent. I wasn't! I spent a lot of time in the Prin- cipal's office, I recall! You were called 'Shorty' then, and long after you outgrew the nickname and the reason for it, we still thought of you as 'Shorty. My nickname still clings after all these years. Occasional car- toons used to appear on the school bulletin board, unsigned. Everyone knew whose work they were! We thought you might turn out to be another Jimmie Frise of Birdseye Centre fame, but your talent took a dif- ferent turn. Time passed. We finished school, left Port Perry, went our dif- ferent ways but always kept in touch. I married Curly during the War, you served overseas with the RCAF , returned safely, and married later Both couples even- tually produced two daughters each. The four parents and four daughters got together as often as possible When you made headlines by winning the national competition for designing the St [Lawrence Seaway emblem, I went around bragging to anyone who would listen that you were my cousin As the years went by, you became better known, both for your art and as a naturalist The four of us began our an- nual spring treks to Point Pelee. With your en- couragement Curly became an enthusiastic and competent bird- watcher: I an en- thusiastic, bungler. 1 never really managed to master my binoculars. It didn't dampen my spirits tho', as long as the weather was fine. food at hand and a pocket novel for rest periods. I recall a couple of Point Pelee' mornings when you three dedicated souls left the motel in a pre-dawn driz- zle, while I slept blissful- ly on. During all those years neither of us forgot Port - Perry. You frequently visited here: friends like Hazel Slemmon and Mr. Smallman. And now, when we aren't half-way across the world somewhere, Curly and I live here. We love our old house, its nooks and crannies, and memories of the Nasmiths who lived in it for fifty-seven years before we came. You dropped in often: we were always delighted to see you. I remember the night you and Jean show- ed slides at the Scugog Historical Society meeting: slides of familiar Port Perry sites in which, as an artist, you saw beauty most of us would have missed. One of your original wood-cuts, a gift to Cur- ly, hangs in our family room. Sorry I was tied up the twice you called in the past few weeks, hoping to come to Port to play golf with me. It would have been fun' Our Pine Ridge Golf course is great for birds: you could have 'birded' while I searched for my ball. | lost nine last week' And now it's too late - we'll never: get to play I'll think of you tho' while I'm playing. whenever | hear a cardinal, or spot a kingfisher So 'Bye, 'Shorty ," we'll miss you, your dry wit - your sense of humour LLearn the ropes, please, for sooner or later all of us will be join- ing you, wherever you are you supply your name and address. So support this very worthwhile cause in a most unusual method Hope that Sean Porter recovers as quickly as possible from the exten- sive burns he received recently in an accident while burning garbage at his grandparent's farm.
