July 9, 1985 Business won't be same without Bettsy Thegbusiness studies department at Porl Perry High School will never be the same When Bettsy Newman took down her shingle from the teaching profes sion and officially retired at the end of June, she ended 18 years of a sparkling teaching career It was her 'third career' in a lifetime that included a stint as a per sonal secretary, a wife and mother, and finally, a teacher The latter, she says, has been an ex perience she wouldn't trade for the world Most of her 18 ygars teaching has been spent within the walls of Port Perry High School, where she made friends with staff and students alike. Her last day at the school, spent packing and cleaning out per- sonal effects from her se- cond floor classroom, was filled with tears and sad good-byes "I'm going to miss this place," she said And many people will miss her, judging by the many fine tributes paid to her in the past few months On May 4th she was recognized for her teaching and for her con- tribution as a secretary for a term with District 17, 0 S.S T*F. at the Of- ficial Durham Regional OSS TF dinner held at the Pickering Recreation Complex Here she was presented with a silver entree dish, after a brief speech given by a port Perry colleague who recalled "Bettsy's dedicated work for her commercial students and thanked her for her Federation assistance. On Thursday June 6th, Mrs. Newman's Grade 12 students surprised her with an impromptu school party, complete with flowers and a huge typewriter-shaped cake, which the group happily consumed as good-byes were said Then on the following Sunday, Mrs Newman's Department head, Bill Sharpe, his wife Audrey 'also of the Port Perry staff), and other members of the business department met at the Sharpe residence in Oshawa for a wine and cheese well-wishing. June 12th saw a more formal reception at the Whitby Yacht Club where the Commercial Directors for the Region gathered for a luncheon and presented Bettsy with roses in recognition for her teaching exper- tise during her career in the Region. Among the guests were Bettsy's four children, John, Janice, Carolyn and Nancy, and spouses, retired Port Perry Principal Grant MacDonald and wife, former Vice Principal Wilmer Hill, current Principal John Gradish, Business Studies director Bill Sharpe, who enter- tained as he instructed the guests on how to han- dle the postal system, he wife Audrey, and other office, custodial and teaching staff from Port Perry High School. The dinner was ar- ranged by Pat Smith and other staff friends of Bettsy. Bettsy herself respond- ed to Mr. Sharpe's in- troduction with a sincere, moving speech as she paid tribute to her - colleagues, former col- leagues and events recalled from her teaching years. It was a nostalgic journey through many memories up to June 1985 and Bettsy was warmly applauded at the close of her address with Graduate Mr Gordon C. Scott, BA BEd son of Mr. and Mrs John McPher- son Scott of 202 Bigelow Street.
