The contest raised an incredible $11,000, and according to Mrs. Shanley, that's the highest single amount raised across the pro- vince in similar contests. When the contest first began in Scugog about four weeks ago, Mrs. Shanley hoped it would raise $5,000 at best. 'Residents of Scugog Township can take a bow for the way they sup- ported this, she told the Star Monday. "Your generosity is unsurpass- ed." The competition seem- ed to reach its peak dur- ing the Festival Days weekend with votes com- ing in right up to the last minute for the 127 con- testants who were nominated. And when all the votes are tallied up Saturday evening, the overall win- ner was Jim Grieve, manager of the Port Perry IGA. Jim had an astounding 148,484 votes. At a penny per vote, it means Jim raised $1484.84 for the Kidney Foundation. Jim will win a deluxe weekend for two at the Essex Park Hotel in Toronto. The title position was threatened by second place finisher, Chuck Dewhirst, a Rotary Club member in the service club category, who rais- ed $1,063.95. Chuck was awarded with deluxe ac- commodation for two at Elmbhirst's Four Seasons Resort at Rice Lake. Third place was taken by Nestleton farmer Floyd Beatty with $355.82. Brantford man struck by young woman Whitby OPP are conti- nuing an investigation in- to an accident on Highway 7A just east of Port Perry early Sunday morning in which a man was struck by a car. A police spokesman told the Star Monday morning that Cecil Roberts, 44, of Brant- ford, was apprently walking along the highway when struck by an eastbound vehicle driven by 25 year old Catherine Golder of Bowmanville. Roberts suffered ma- jor injuries as a result of the accident and was rushed to Port Perry Hospital. The accident took place just west of the Highway 7A intersection with Durham Road 7. Police are releasing no other details until their investigation has been completed. NO INJURIES A two car accident on Highway 7A about noon on Sunday resulted in. about $1800 damage, but no injuries to the occupants. Police say a car driven by Carl Adams of Blackstock went out of control just east of the Durham Road 7 intersec- tion and struck the right side of a vehicle driven by James Shields of Whitby.
