é -- PORT PERRY STAR -- July 23, 1985 letters Dogs & bikes Dear Sir: I must give everyone a hand that had anything to do with putting on this weekend's festival days. - For young and old, it was great, always something to do or see. BUT! Bikes, bikes everywhere it wasn't safe to walk on the street or sidewalk. The brats try to see how close they can come to you. Why can't anyone control this? And the collie that was bitten in the face at the Sexist, negative connotation of that attraction between the sexes A beauty and intelligence contest amongst a certain seg- ment of the female polarity 1s another celebration of that dif- ference and one that is part of our ongoing ritual a positive and mutt show by the shepard. It could have been the face of that ht- tle boy or my leg. I like dogs but that scared me If you can't control your mutt, then keep it away from events like this and off the main street. Lots of people are afraid of dogs and especially a mutt like that. For next year's show, put a muz- zle on your shepard Thanks, C. Smith, Port Perry, sexist upgrading event. The 17 year old was named 4th runner-up in the Miss Model portion of the Pageant, and 2nd runner-up in the Miss Beauty competition. She was delighted with these standings, especially since this was the first time she had entered the Hemisphere Pageant, but more so because this Pageant at- tracts a lot of beautiful and talented young ladies hoping to break in- to the tough world of pro- fessional modelling and fashion. In an interview with the Star following the Pageant, Stephanie said candidly that when she saw the other young women she would be competing against, she wondered about her chances. "I really thought 1 might as well go home," she said with a smile. Her second and forth places were more than credible considering there were almost 60 competitors in each, and Stephanie is now hoping WEDDING INVITATIONS and Accessories PORT PERRY STAR 235 Queen Street Port Perry 985-7383 the exposure from the Pageant will open some doors and ultimately lead to a full ime career as a professional model In the Miss Model part, all the girls were re- quired to go through a 30 second commercial routine in either casual or evening outfits. And for Miss Beauty, they won formal gowns, bathing suits, and had to give a 30 second speech in front of the judges. Stephanie said the two day event was a gruell- ing, even exhausting af- fair. (Try standing in high spikes for several hours, not able to even sit down a moment for fear of putting a few wrinkles in the dress). Aside from the fact that the who's of the Canadian fashion and modelling world pay very close attention to the winners at the Pageant, Stephanie won a couple of trophies, numerous gifts of cosmetics, fashion jewellery, a Bulova watch, hair care, anc even limited member-- ships at fitness and tan- ning salons. And she was one of 12 contestants selected by the judges to take a "screen test' for the popular TV show Dynasty. Stephanie will be sent a TV script, and prepare a video, which will be judged. One of the 12 girls will wind up with an all expense paid tzip-to- the set of Dynasty in New York. All that would be nice, however, Stephanie's main interest at the mo- ment is fashion modell ing. She has taken a pro- fessional course, and has GUARANTEED INVESTMENT CERTIFICATES - Annual Rates - 11 1/8% - Semi-Annual Rates - YEAR YEARS YEARS YEARS > YEARS 91/8% 102% 10% % 10 7/18% - Monthly Rates - YEAR > YEARS 878% 9% % been in several shows In Toronto tor Plum Tree Fashions and fashion wholesalers. Stephanie is quick to point out that while the world of the professional model may appear to be all glitz and glamour, it is really a lot of hard work. It's tough to break in and there are some rocky roads along the way. She already has had one bad experience where she did some fashion work, was pro- mised money for it and § ed Prat. never saw a nickel. The talent agent disappeared into thin air. ' That's why she 1s so hopeful that her showing at the Hemisphere Pageant will help her get lined with a reputable agency in Toronto. There is one thing cer- tain in the life of this 5 foot 8 inch brown-eyed blonde, she will be heading back to Port Perry High School in September to start grade 12 classes. To get to the Hemisphere Pageant od x a 4 1 Hel oh ~ Miss Canadian Hemisphere earlier this month, Stephanie had some help from several Port Perry businesses and in- dividuals, including David's Hairstyling, Country Classics, Strawberry Threads, Greg's Mens Wear, Bruton's Drugs, Stone Real Estate, Joel Aldred and Bud Pellow. She's grateful for their help, and who knows, some day in the future, they might be able to claim that they helped a Vogue cover girl get a start. Seventeen year old Stephanie Butt of Port Perry placed fourth and second in two categories of the recent Miss Canadian Hemisphere Pageant in Toronto. Stephanie has her eye on a career as a professional model.
