"How can this be allowed? The police gave me one list of what is considered obscene. Then they allow an of- ficer to make his own opinion after they set precedent by giving me that first list of which we removed any of the titles we did have. Why not a second letter asking me to remove more movies that they have found to be obscene? Instead, a warrant stating other obscene material." In his fight against the charges, Mr. Hoffman has enlisted the help of politicians, so-called por- nography experts like Mary Brown and jour- nalists, including June Callwood, columnist with the Globe and Mail. In a June 27 column, Ms. Callwood points out the Durham arresting of- ficers had just completed an obscenity course pro- vided by Project P, the combined Metro Toronto Police and Ontario Pro- vincial Police squad that, to quote Ms Callwood, "guards the province's morality "A complaint against Mr Hoffman by a woman who works in a rape crisis centre provid- ed this officer with his first opportunity to test his new skill at determin- ing what is pornographic by consulting a list," Ms. Callwood wrote. The trial has been cost- ly in more ways than one. Not only did Mr. Hoffman wrack up ap- proximately $11,000 in legal bills, but he was forced to sell his business, due to the sharp drop in sales and rentals caused by his arrest. Most video tape dealers in Mr. Hoffman's situation plead guilty and pay the small fine rather than endure the legal ex- pense, tension, invest- ment of time, long delays and potential damage to reputation. Said Mr. Hoffman, "I don't figure I've done anything wrong. Why should I decide what peo- ple should see? No one died and made me God." In the meantime, Jim and his wife Valerie both desperately want a child to call their own and they're acutely aware that the conviction might put an abrupt end to their dreams of adoption. No matter what the end result of his inter- view with the Attorney General, Mr. Hoffman will keep on fighting. -- i HIP TT BT i g di il do lt pa AE RS fd i 3 2 " AR A SG IR ra Sn - AEH ty .
