16 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 23, 1985 Get cookin' now on Homecraft Although the Port Perry Fair is still more than a month away, now 1s the time to start think ing and preparing entries for the Homecraft com petitions. Formerly known as the Women's section of the fair, the Homecraft competitions are open to anybody who knows how to bake a great chocolate cake, who is deft with a needle, or who is pretty darn good with plastic model kits. Anybody can enter, but nobody can enter more than one specimen in each contest, so you have to make up your mind which bottle of strawberry preserves is tastier. All entries also have to be new articles not entered in previous Port Perry Fairs, with the exception of quilts and rugs. Many local merchants have gone out of their way to supply prizes and prize money to prize win- ners and organizers Bet- ty Cincurak (president of the Homecraft division) and Marilyn Smith (vice- president) are hoping for lots of competition. For flower fans, there's the Cut Flowers and Potted Plants com- petitions with special prizes from the Green- bank Garden Centre and the Scugog Island Women's Institute. For gourmet types there's the Domestic Science division with prizes for the best bread and rolls, quick breads and rolls, cakes and pies, cookies, tarts, and can- dy. granny cake and a special men only apple pre contest In the Specials divi- sion, don't forget the Fry's Cocoa Family Favourite with a ten dollar first prize for the best fan uy favourite dessert made with you guessed at, Fry's Cocoa JM Schneider Ltd will supply prizes for the best peach pie, spice cake and date squares and the Durham Region Cream Producers' Association has prizes for the best chocolate layer cake, butter tarts and chocolate brownies Ocala Orchards will shell out $25 for the tastiest fresh apple pre, Hank's Pastries has gift certificates for the best decorated special occa sion cake, and Mother Jacksons Open Kitchens has boxes of meat pies for the best quiche Dowson's Valu-Mart will provide ten dollars for the champion pie chosen from all the first prize classes, and Kreative Kitchens has gift cer: tificates for the best decorated character cake And no Port Perry Fair would be complete without the extra special Dark Fruit Cake com- petition, with a satisfying $75 first prize for the best cake with almond paste and plain icing. The Port Perry Loyal Orange Lodge supplies the cash prizes, which have gone to Ona Short of Seagrave over the past few years. In the canning divi- sion, cash prizes will be offered for the best cann- ed fruit, jams and jellies, pickles and relishes, plus three special categories. Of course, there's the senior citizens' work with prizes for best art- work, woodworking, sewing, afghan, crocheting or tatting, Christmas tree or- naments, clothing, 'and collections of either post cards or buttons. For serious seam , sewers there's the an nual Canada Packer's Quilt Competition with a first prize of $700 for the winning quilt at the an nual quilt convention ir. Toronto. If you've got a great quilt, enter it in the Port Perry Fair and if you win there, you go or to compete at a Disrict Annual Meeting of Canada Packers. Only the first prize quilt from the District Annual Meeting will be eligible to enter the Canada Packer's Chumpionship Competition at the An- nual Convention In Toronto. New this year is part of the agenda on the Crafts and Hobbies list. The Port Perry Royal Canadian Legion will of- fer prizes for the total highest points in the competition and W.W. One Hour Photo will award the winner of each class with free processing. There's also a special section for those of us lucky enough to be age 19 or younger with prize cash for photography, cookies, fridge magnets, best dressed zucchini or cucumber, place mats, mini scarecrow, nutritious snack food, woodworking, kite, and all sorts of other com- petitions. Armour McMillan of Greenbank will hand a trophy over to the winner with the most points and the Honeydale Women's In- stitute will also offer special prizes. Sound like lots to do"? It is! Muriel Gibson and the McKeans went to Iroquois Park, Whitby, to attend a concert to hear Wilf Carter who is 81 years young. Kitty Wells, the Wright Brothers and Joe Aylword's Yelverton Express made up the en- joyable concert on Thursday evening. It was good to see Rev. Mrs. Jack Roundell visiting their friends in Greenbank this week. Mr. Roundell of- ficiated at the wedding on Saturday of Mary Parish and Robert Van Chaik. It was a lovely wedding, with the church full of family and friends Mary's two sisters and two brothers sang in a quartette four times dur: ing the very impressive service.
