18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 30, 1985 Sports Gamblers finally reach the top of the pack For the first time since the North Durham Fastball League started back in early May, the Greenbank Gamblers sit alone atop the league standings. The Greenbank team had three. games postponed early in the season and the Goodwood-Uxbridge Auto Wreckers were win- ning all of their games with the result that Good- wood was always ahead of the Gamblers on points. However, by winning both their league games last week the Greenbank squad stretched their record to 15 and 0 and took over sole possession of first place. On Monday night in Greenbank Park the Cartwright Minor Softball leagues by Chris Cliff Junior Division After being rained out on Monday night, Breezy Acres Farms and Domi- nion Hardware met on Thursday night, with Dominion Hardware becoming the winners with a score of 21-13. It had been anybody's game up to this moment. Port Perry Kinsmen - 15 Thompson's Village Market - 7 The Kinsmen con- tinued their fine playing of late as they combined a fine hitting attack along with an excellent display of defence. Dwayne and Darren Guay had a single and a double each. Cory Wilson hit a homer, and a single, while Andy Mackie con- tributed two doubles. Excellent defensive plays were provided for the Kinsmen by Jeff Brett, Dwayne Guay and a game ending line drive Golf news Sunny skies and warm breezes prevailed at Crestwood"s popular Mixed Two Ball Tourna- ment, which was co sponsored by Labatt's Featuring the Chap man format, the 9th an nual event attracted a record entry from a wide area Following the usual delicious appetizers and the traditional "Do-It Yourself Steak BBQ." Sunderland scored a run in the second inning and another in the seventh with shortstop Andy Double scoring the run in both innings. The Gamblers scored a pair of runs in the se- cond inning when cat- cher Gary Baker led off the inning with a home run over the left field fence, followed by singles from John Foster and Rodd Real and Roland Osske's double. Greenbank wrapped up the win in the fourth inning when they counted three more runs. John Foster led off with a triple, Rodd Real drew a base on balls and Roland Osske had his se- cond.!'RBI"" of the game with a sharp single to left field. Dennis Romeril drove in the second run of the inning and Hugh Johnston cashed the third run as he singled sharply to centre, to end the scoring in the game. The following night in Claremont the Gamblers were very fortunate to come home with a 98 win over the scrappy Clare- mont Legion team. Because of injuries, vacations, and night shift committments, the Greenbank team played with the minimum nine players with a number of players at unfamiliar positions. In the top of the first in- ning, the Gamblers scored twice on walks to Steve Foster and Trevor Till and Hugh Johnston's run scoring single and Don Beaton's sacrifice fly. In the bottom half of the inning the wheels came off the Gambler wagon and a combina- tion of Claremont hits and Greenbank errors saw 6 Claremont batters cross home plate. and Claremont hold a 6-2 lead after only one inning However, the Gamblers refused to quit and got one run back in the second on walks to Rodd Real. Steve Foster and Trevor Till and Ken Goreski's sacrifice fly ball In the third inning Don Beaton brought the score to 6-1 as he homered deep to right centre field Then in the fourth inn- ing Rodd Real drew his second walk of the game and scored on Ken Goreski's long double Steve Foster sacrificed Goreski to third base and Trevor Till cashed him with a line drive single and the game was tied 6-6 In the top half of the sixth inning the Gamblers took a 7-6 lead on doubles by Rodd Real ans Steve Foster. But the Claremont team stormed back in the bottom of the sixth to score two runs on hits by Carruthers, Pascoe, Redshaw and Winters to give Claremont an 8-7 lead going into the final inning. But as they have done many times in the past, the Gamblers scrambled back with a pair of runs in the seventh to take a 9-8 lead. Brian Till started the comeback with a clean single up the middle. Pascoe then struck out John Foster but the catcher missed the third strike and Foster beat the throw to first with Brian Till mov- ing on to third base. Roland Osske singled Till home to tie the game and John Foster scored the winner as he tagged up and scored from third on Rodd Real's long sacrifice fly. Roland Osske had come in to releive Ken Goreski in the sixth inn- ing and he sat the Clare- mont batters down one- two-three in the seventh and the Gamblers came home with a 9-8 win in a real "barn-burner" of a game. Greenbank is still missing their speedy left fielder, Neil Rodd, who has been unable to play since taking a fast ball on the leg from Trenton's Jim Burkett in the Graf- ton Tournament. Hopefully, he will be recovered shortly as the Gamblers sorely miss their excellent lead off batter. This week sees the wind up of the regularly scheduled "North Durham Fastball League' season, and soon the playoffs will be here. On Friday night of this week (August 2nd) the Gamblers play in Green- bank Park at 7:30 p.m. This will be the first game of the four day Canadian Tire Tourna- ment in Port Perry and the organizers of the Tournament have con- sented to playing a game in Greenbank Friday night to help entertain the crowd at the Green- bank United Church Bar-B-Q. The Gambler's second game of the Tournament will be played in Port Perry on Saturday and the third game will go on Sunday with the finals being held on Monday. The following week will see the Gamblers back in O.R.S.A. action against Wardsville who ousted Jarvis in two straight games. (Ward- sville is between London and Chatham). The dates for the Wardsville series have not been finalized but will be announced in next weeks Port Perry Star. Each DACO player had a good game but special mention has to go to short stop Lynda Ashton and first base Bonnie Fitzgerald, the two being responsible for all three outs in one inn- ing. In the outfield, Eve Johnston and Debbie Mason made some ex- cellent plays. The Seagrave team also played good baseball with the games only home runs hit by Fran Taylor and Debbie Andrews.
