Port Perry vs. Markham The whistle to start the game hadn't gone but the war had begun. Markham had a thirty second chant from the huddle that seemed to unsettle the Port Perry players for the first few minutes. The play was all around the Port Perry penalty area and only some great defensive play by Karen Kett - who won't be nine till later this month - Lindsay Parry and David Pashley kept Markham off the scoreboard. Things settled down to a see-saw battle with the offensive edge going to Markahm but the score remaining 0-0 at the half. Five minutes into the second half Todd Smart drove a hard shot from outside the box past the diving goalie to put Port Perry into the lead 1-0. Markham were stung and showed it by really turning on the pressure. Steve Desautel with Dave Bourgeois and Michael Pashley another player who is still only eight - on the half back line kept the Markham shooters at bay with some good team work on defense. When the final whistle went the score of Port Perry 1, Markham 0 bore out the fact the teams were very evenly matched. Port Perry vs. Bowmanville The wind had strenghtened con- siderably by the start of the third game but Port Perry went straight on the offence against the wind and within five minutes Steve Desautel took a beautiful cross from Duane Empr- ingham and angled a lovely shot into the cor- ner past the outstretched goalie. This gave Port Perry a one goal lead and they kept the pressure on with Jeremy Williams, right wing and Mike Tripp left wing constantly feeding the ball into the centre. Only some good defen- sive scrambling by the Bowmanville defence kept the score down to 1-0 Minor softball (From page 23) and a single by Brandi Boardman. Ten minutes later Casey Vanderlinden put Burl- 'ington two up and Port Perry began to feel they were in a replay of the semi-final. Two minutes before half time, Mark Commisso gave Burl- ington a three to nothing lead which stayed at that when the half time whis- tle blew. Port Perry pressed the attack with the wind at their backs during the se- cond half but the Burl- ington defence hung tough. Despite great ef- forts from Michael Williams, Jeremy Williams, Jeff Andrews and all the team they couldn't buy a goal!
