The Township's animal control officer in Goodwood should be con- tacted if a person suspects that an animal may have rabies. If the animal is dead, the Federal Agriculture department in Bowman- ville will send the specimen to Ottawa for testing, and if positive, the results will be known in two days. The spokesperson told the Star it is an absolute necessity for people to have their household pets vaccinated for rabies on an annual basis. Pets that contact the disease will start show- ing symptoms such as unusual behavior, ag- gression, lack of interest in food and water, and eventual paralysis. Cats especially, may become very hostile and aggressjve. The federal agriculture department has also received several reports of strange behavior in ground hogs this year, but there have been no confirmed cases of rabies in these animals. It's believed that the strange behavior in ground hogs is being caused by a parasite that affects the brain.
