And because so little is known about the cause, there is no cure. The disease 1s progressive, and eventually fatal. Vic- tims usually live seven to 15 years after diagnosis, and it leads to deteriora- tion of general health. Dr. Webster said the research has shown that victims have fewer brain cells, the actual brain size shrinks, and nerve endings in the cortex of the brain degenerate and disrupt the passage of electrochemical signals through the cells. Just why these nerve endings become tangled has yet to be determined by medical science, he said. The symptoms usually begin with loss of memory, confusion about normally simple tasks and eventual im- pairment of the intellec- tual functions. As the disease pro- gresses, speech is af- fected, the victim ap- pears clumsy and awkward, may lose con- trol of bodily. functions, and ultimately all physical functions degenerate Unexplained depression may also be an early symptom of the disease, along with out- bursts of temper Because there 1s no specific test, diagnosis is difficult and often a pro- cess of ehhmination At the meeting last week, Ms Jenkins stressed that famihes of victims will save themselves a lot of later problems if they arrange a general power of at- torney for a victim as soon as possible after a diagnosis has been made, espegially before the victim fecomes imcompetent She said the will of a victim should be checked carefully and if there are any revisions to be made, they should be done quickly before the disease progresses. Designating general power of attorney is an easy low cost legal step ($50 to $100) and there can be more than one person given the power of attorney. The implications for the spouse and im- mediate family members of a victim of Alzheimers can be devastating. said social worker Karen McMillan She said it 1s crucial that families get as much information as they can to prepare for what they are facing, and sources such as the Public Health or Community Care can be very helpful And family members should contact and join organizations like the Alzheimers Society of Durham where ideas and self-support can be shared.
