6 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, Sept. 24, 1985 letters Funding school system Dear Sir: Recently | have been reading most of the ar: ticles regarding the issue of funding the Separate School System. This issue is an emotional issue for both sides. The both sides | refer to are the public school system and the private system In reality, there is a more subtle implication, the public system 1s fre- quently Protestant and the separate system 1s Catholic This sounds like the Orange and Green of the old days In the same context we often find words hke tolerance, understan- ding, brotherhood, discrimination, etc The recent article in The Toronto Star (Sept 18, 1985) depicted a deal between Bill Davis and Cardinal Carter Perhaps they did have a deeper understanding of the issue than most of us Premier Davis as the former Minister of Education for Ontario certainly has dealt with this problem and its philosophical 1mplica- tions. Mr Davis was a great premier and fair leader 1 firmly believe he knew that his decision would be greeted unreasonably and that the transition would be difficult. However, | also believe that Mr. Davis had a profound vision of education in Ontario. He embraced all those con- cepts mentioned earlier, tolerance, etc. while at the same time con- templating issues such as freedom of access, and ultimately a vision of one system for all. If one looks back to re- cent studies of our educa- tional systein in Ontario (the Rose Report and SE RP), there were frequent references to Shared facilities, curriculum development and even provincial wide teacher salary negotia- tions. There are many ef- ficiencies to be realized from having one system Reader Dear Sir In response to your editorial "Allegation Un- founded" of 10 September concerning the Conflict of Interest of editorial comments (From page 4) It 1s not unreasonable to suspect that because of the tampering, Canadians are going to avoid tins of tuna when they visit the local supermarkets And what about overseas customers who buy food products from this country? What are they going to think when there's even a hint of potential health problems? The Fishenes Minister obviously made a bad mistake in over-ruling his inspectors reports. Not only will the fall-out hurt the processing plant for tuna. but Canada's reputation as an exporter of food products has been damaged as well Mr Fraser should have known that there 1s one thing Canadians will never overlook their health We rely on federal inspectors to ensure that products of all kinds that make their way to supermarket shelves and our dinner tables are not going to harm our health To tamper in any way with that process 1s in- excusable Opposition members are quite nght when they say that John Fraser should resign as Minister of Fishenes and Oceans It has reasons to do so Letters to the Editor policy always been the policy of this newspaper to encourage our readers to make use of the letters to the editor column Our readers have a night to freely express their opinions and viewpoints on just about any subject, and we feel that a hvely letters column helps make a better community newspaper We insist, however, that a letter writer sign his or her name On rare occasions, we will agree to with-hold pubhcation of a writer s name. if we feel there are very good Under no circumstances will this paper print an anonymous letter to the editor While. we enjoy receiving letters from our readers, we must continue to insist on know ing the identity of the writer letter for all, both financially for the taxpayer and for uniformity in educa- tional standards for our students. Perhaps it is time all of us thought about the children. Our students have been criticized for not know- ing how to spell or simple math and grammar rules. Most of this criticism has been level- ed by adults who came through a system which did have uniformity in the provincial Depart- mental Examinations. Again this system as | am sure Mr. Davis was aware was criticized by a commission during Mr. Davis' reign. At that time, I was a student in a separate high school and was not prepared for the examination. Subse- quently, I graduated (Turn to page 7) responds to editorial Mayor Jerry Taylor, 1 submit the following facts and comments. The Mayor after being elected involved himself in some land speculation. He knew at the time that this would have to go before council. He also knew that this particular council was not known for its speed in making decisions. It was perhaps better known for its tendency to vacillate over any matter. This adds up to many discus- sions on the zoning changes for the land and therefore many absences by the mayor, which were sure to be noted and commented upon Although the mayor can declare his conflict on this particular piece of land for development and absent himself from the discussion How 1s he influenced by other developers requiring somng changes" Does he vote (as tie breaker) or favour them in discus: sion so that council has a record of voting for zon- ing and development changes. and therefore can hardly refuse to vote against his development mterests" The mavor in declar ing a confhet of interest also demes the voters the imput of a full council As the mavor absents himself from the chair. a voting councillor acts a pro tem mayor. taking the chair. councillors take this in turn. but on one occasion the coun cillor refused to take his turn: This takes away the vote of that councillor acting as pro tem chair man. unless the vote 1s needed to break a tie However it only leaves five councillors to vote so there should not be a tie therefore. we as voters lose the full input of council I should hke to pont out that at no ime have 1 indicated that the mayor acted illegally Conflict of Interest 1s Police Officers receive awards Constables Frank Hammond and Wolfgang Palleske of 26 Division were presented with Police awards for bringing a woman out of a burning house in Caesarea last year. The awards were presented at the very difficult, and like justice, must be seen to be done The mayor created a conflict of in- terest while in office. I do not believe that the rules governing conflict of in- terest were meant to cover this situation. Although the mayor has not broken the rules or done anything illegal. It must be seen to be clean and fair and within the spirit of the rules and in this respect the mayor has failed, therefore, | call for the resignation of the mayor Sincerely, Colin L.. Kemp, Nestleton. Police awards night held last Friday night in Bowmanville.
