a HE BT Water system flushed Residents of Port Perry and Prince Albert should keep an ear open for a Durham Region "sound truck' over the next three weeks That truck will be warning residents that the water system in their area is about to be shut off for cleaning. While that shut-off 1s tak- ing place, residents should not turn their taps on. A spokesman for the Regional Works department said last week that notices were mailed out to all water customers in Port Perry and Prince Albert, and as well a notice was placed in this paper as well. When the water is actually shut off, works crews have found that the sound truck system works well as a warning. The spokesman said however, that in the case of businesses which must have water such as medical and dental offices, restaurants and hair dressing establishments, prior notice will be given when the water is to be shut off. The thorough cleaning of the water lines will be done by inserting a sponge-like device through the fire hydrants. The Works department spokesman said it is hoped the cleaning of the lines will help im- prove taste, smell and colour pro- blems in the water in recent months. The work will get underway Oc- tober 15 and be finished about November 8. When a'section of the line is shut down, this will last about two hours. Uxbridge festival will be dropped Uxbridge's annual summer festival "Spring Water Days' will likely be dropped next year due to lack of interest from organizers and participants The ten year festivity held in Ux- bridge during the last week of June has during the past two years lost over $7.000 and although the com- mittee running the event still have a small surplus of cash, there is not enough interest to keep the event going. In Port Perry. the Chamber of Commerce has run into the same problem the past two years losing over $4,000 operating the former Western Days and the new Festival Days celebrations The lose of this money according to Chamber president Peter Hvidsten is due to small crowds at- tending the dances held during the festivities Last summer the Chamber of Commerce changed the name of their annual event to Festival Days and added many new features which included concerts and plays in the park. pancake breakfast. a marguee tent at the park. auction sale and a giant pancake flip The new ideas created a lot of interes! and the town witnessed one of the best attended celebrations in recent history But. hke Spring Water Days in Uxbridge.
